If you shifted your wheels would stop spinning for a little while and you would move forward out of the box.

Really? Go ahead and shift, just make it quick. You will be fine. As far as starting in 2nd....I always wondered that as well. If you have a good clutch I guess it would work.

I start on 2nd and keep the rpm@7000 and let down the ebrake once I feel a little pull.

i tried both ways, on 15" azenis. i personally like dropping the clutch in second gear, trying to shift while doing a burnout takes some practice

What about waterbox etiquette??

For FWD Cars, do you roll thru the water box and burnout right in front of it where it's semi moist, with the rear tires still in the box? and then roll out and stage??

Do you roll thru it completely and do a burnout in the dry? Do you burnout in the box?

NO! pull forward past the box... spinning in the water is a no-no...

I can usually get into 4th in a burnout as long as theres a good amount of water in the box, but I only do that when I am doing burn-out contests, I usually just pop the clutch in first and do quik shifts to 3rd and let off the e brake and pull her forward...not really hard, I shift fast when going down the 1/4 just as fast as when doing burnouts...

On the race car, I usually lined up the front slicks right at the water, put it in 1st gear, chirp it for a slight second untill all surfaces are wet, then roll out of the water box at the moist area, then put it in 2nd gear, rev it to 7000 rpms ish (or use two step), dump the clutch and just keep flooring it. let it bounce off the rev limiter and turn the steering wheel side to side. Once you feel like you have gotten enough heat, release the e-brake and roll out.

Same thing on my street car..
