Default tranny identification

I have a 88' std. hatch, and a 5-speed tranny i believe to be an Si tranny laying around that i wanna slap into it. The thing is, all the trannies i have are L3's, and this tranny has 21 splines on it. how can I tell without a doubt that it's a Si tranny or not?

Does it have a stamp on it like PL3 3000, PL3 A000, PL3 A1000? 88 tranny's aren't supposed to have these markings. It's about the size of a nickel and located around the fill bolt. Let me know b/c I'm interested. I believe I have an 88 tranny but it's stamped PL3 A100, which is supposed to mean it's 89-91. It's currently on my car so I can't count the splines.

I think so. I can't look at mine now b/c it's at my in-laws but I believe it's there. If you don't see it then it probably doesn't have one. Mista Bone is right once again.

it could be a Si.

Remember the 88-89 Si's used small bearing cases just like the DX/STD trannys.

mista bone - how about rpms'? what rpm's would we be at a certain speed? That should clear up everything. Hopefully

Oh and another thing...i think mines a DX tranny and assuming it is what are my options for better gearing? I'm thinking 90-91 Si tranny? What about a ZC cable tranny? I don't want to spend a ton of money if i do upgrade...how hard would it be to swap myself?

Thanks,
VINCE
