Default cheapest LS/vtec setup?

im lookin to do an lsvtec setup in the future, and i was wondering if you guys can suggest the cheapest way of doing it. the motor is gonna have to be a 97 and up since my car is a 97. i was thinking of:

b18b block
stock b16 head
stock LS rods
b16 pistons (no modification necessary?)
ARP rod bolts
VTEC oil pump
VTEC water pump (necessary?)

anyway, just figured that may be a simple build with stock parts. not looking for too much power.. but then again i guess itll add up anyway since id have to get it built and tuned...

any thoughts on a setup?

cheap + building a motor = disaster.

honestly dude, if you cheap out, it's gonna blow up on you. and no, the motor doesn't have to come off a 97 ls, it can also come off a 94, 95, etc etc.

save yourself the trouble and get a gsr motor.

you will be fine using b16 pistons

the only way of building a motor is by spending money on all the crutial parts such *** bearings, pistons, rods and headgasket. there is not such thing as a cheap reliable motor.

always when building a motor, over estimate the price by atleast 30%. i learned the hard way, i have over 10k into my motor and it wont be ready until this spring.
i had only planed on putting 5k into it but then decided that a turbo would be the way to go. when going turbo with a B20 you need new sleeves and so on.

i suggest that you search as much as possible and reaserch on the build up that you are planing on before anything.

wow, just from that statement, i would never listen to you. B18B blocks are 81mm, same as B16 block, B18C block.... B20 blocks, however, are 84mm...

thanks for the input...

yes, i do need a 97 and up for smog purposes...

and i do realize that, in a sense, there isnt a cheap way to build a motor.. but maybe i didnt phrase it the right way... i just meant what would be a relatively cheap setup using stock parts... notice i didnt *** expensive cams or headwork into the setup... if i were to do this setup, i would definitely have it built by a reputable engine builder and tuner...

then again, i guess a GSR motor would be a better way to go... i just thought that using cheaper, stock parts would maybe yeild a cheaper price than a stock gsr...
