B17 Question??
Has anyone ever seen or heard of anyone swapping a B17 into a 96+ Civic coupe? I was just thinking about it. I dont know alot about the B17 and I myself have never even seen one swapped into any model Civic in person I have seen Jason Katman's Civic on the FF squad web page but never one in person. Would it even be worth the while to do this swap? Is it like the other dual cam vtec engines can you intercange parts like the pistons or cams from the itr or ctr and any other parts? Im just curious I never pay attention to that motor it always my d16y8 or the b18c that it seems like Im always interested in.
If you can find one and your state doesn't have any emissions regulations, then you could go for it. You would need an OBD1 to OBD2 wiring harness adapter to make wiring simplier. The B17 is nearly identical to a B16A. The heads are the same, so valvetrain parts are interchangeable. Other B-series pistons will fit, but I'm not too sure on what kind of C/R's you would get with the different pistons. Other options would be to go with a B16, B18B/C, or if you have the $$, a H22. HTH.

it can be done as easily as a b16. as you heard above b17 is nearly identical to a b16 a same hp and a few more lbs of tq ..117lbs i believe. I say if u can find one with decent miles for a cheap price get it ohh almost forgot you will need a hydro tranny. If you buy the b17 as a whole it comes with a cable tranny.
you can bolt any B-series engine into any 92+ civic with the proper mounts, axles, shift linkage, ECU, transmission, wire harrness, etc.
A B17 is virtually identical to a cable B16A engine, except the block reads B17A1....and it's an OBD1 equipped engine. Yes you can interchange parts with other B-series Vtec engines with a B17A....such as cams, pistons, valve train, valve covers, ITR intake manifold etc. The B17 uses a B16A head.
I'd have to say the only downside to a B17A engine is the compression. You'd definitely need swap out the pistons for somthing better.....at least a set of B16A pistons....or you can go CTR pistons like I did
I had fun with my B17, wish I still had it too!

Hey Katman do you know where I could find a B17 that is in good shape I think that I found one but as I was reading in the posts I would need a hydraulic tranny . What would be the best tranny for this engine? Im thinking of trying to get one of these engines and start hooking it up but not right now need some more $$. What does a B17 in good shape usually run cost wise? What else did you have done to that engine of yours Katman besides some CTR pistons? Im getting tired of messing with my d16y8 and some day Im probably going to swap it out although it has claimed it share of dual cams.
hah..i'm not the source of all B17's! I only had one
I actually don't know of any B17's for sale...at least in my area. You only need a hydro tranny if your chassis requires it....what year is your car?
ALL 92+ civics/94+ Integras use Hydro trannys.
88-91 civic/90-93 integra's use cable type when hybriding.
I believe a complete b17 usually goes for about $2000 or under...don't quote me though. That's about how much they were a couple years ago.
I had CTR pistons, lightened stock flywheel, stock b16a head with ITR valvetrain, Spoon intakr cam/ ITR exh cam, Spoon cam sprockets, ITR intake manifold, Skunk ECU, JDM 421 ITR exh. manifold, and some other knick knacks here and there...
I dynoed 174 to the wheels and about 127ft lbs of torque...
you can see my last dyno sheet here:

wow..that was back in 99....just realized that...
