Default Typical Life of brakes

I have a 97 GSR and haven't changed my brakes since the day I bought the car. I have only 40k miles. My brakes aren't squeaking yet. I was wondering, how long do brakes last? How often do you guys change the brakes?

Depends on your style of driving. My uncle never changed his pads on his camry until 50K or so. I'd say just check it out to be safe.

I also have a 97 gs-r and I just changed the front brakes after 45000 miles. They were pretty damn worn too. The rears will be good for another year of driving according to my mechanic. I drive pretty damn hard so you will probably be okay. I would still get them inspected to be 100% sure. Also, I think you need to change your brake fluids at 45000 miles.

I have a 98 LS with about 56k miles on it and my brakes haven't started squeaking yet either. I don't feel any grinding either.

I thought the pads were supposed to squeak when they need replacement? or should it be changed even before the squeaks are heard?

btw, I do a lot of driving and I live in a hilly area so I brake quite often.

yeah, i believe brakes start squealing to warn you that they're wearing down.

Checking the brake pads for wear is a pretty easy thing to do. Should take you no more than 30 minutes....probably takes you longer to jack up the car and take the wheels off than it does to check the pads. If you have access to a service manual, read up on replacing brake pads to learn how to check the pads. Its really very easy.

I have a 95 LS 5 speed and my front pads lasted 90k. My rear ones lasted 45k and replaced them again at 90k with the front. My wife's auto accord fronts don't last but 30k.

You really don't need to flip the caliper up.
A quick way to check is to look at the opening on the caliper.
you need to take the wheel of.

Remeber that you are "freewheeling" more often in an auto since it is set up to shift into overdrive gears ASAP,
as opposed to a stick where you get to choose gears and have engine braking accordingly.

If anyone has any doubts, you need to change brake fluid every two years.

My fronts lasted 30K, with aggressive driving. The fronts have wear indicators which make a squeaking sound when the brakes are NOT applied to signify that they are worn.
