weight @ rims vs. weight inside car...
hi all,
35 pounds less because of lighter rims or 35 pounds less from cleaning out my trunk/back seat... is either better than the other?
(i'm thinking about getting light weight wheels and wanted to know what the little weight reduction would do for my car).

More important in the wheels. CHeck out last months SCC and it explains some formulas that sort it all out for both wheels and flywheel. Pretty interesting. According to their example a flywheel weight reduction has a very large effect.

It's actually both... depdending on your application.
Suppose you take off 35lbs off the tire/rim combo (highly unlikely, btw), does this make your car turn better (i.e. autox)? No. Sure, the wheel/tire has less weight and it requires less force to rotate, but if the body weighs over 3000lbs, then there will be a huge body lean.
The other situation (i.e. drag racing) is something that we're all familiar with... 20" dubs on a lightweight civic will bog it down.
All I'm saying is, a small weight change (less than 100lbs) will not effect the handling of the car very much... if the weight is taken off at the wheel, it might help with acceleration by very little. (however, lighter rim/tire does help w/ braking feel and distance.)
