Default Sprung vs. Unsprung Weight

What is a good definition of sprung vs. unsprung weight?

While watching the 24h. Lemans I think they defined unsprung weight as items that sit outside of the chassis? Is that correct?

They were a little unclear.

Unsprung weight is anything on the car that the springs do not support....

Sprung weight would be the chassis and engine, the unsprung weight is the suspension components, wheels, tires, brakes, etc. Decreasing unsprung weight means less inertia for the suspension parts to move and they can respond to road surfaces more quickly and truely. Unsprung weight is especially important to the drive wheels, as more weight is more power loss through the drivetrain. Thats why we hate heavy, oversized wheels. It would be like switching to a heavier flywheel.
