dfi or stand alone
is anyone here using DFI for air/fuel control, etc....?
i'm trying to do some research on which is better for an all-motor setup before i get cams.
from the little that i know it seems to be a cheaper alternative to Power FC or Hondata, but i'm not sure if i'm looking at a complete setup.
do you have full control of the ecu with dfi as you would with a Power FC?
any input would be appreciated. i'd really like to know as much as i can. thanks.

Accel DFI is a full stand alone engine management unit. It's big with the domestic crowd (Turbo Buicks, Outlaw 5 liters). The answer to your question in yes. You can control any and all engine functions with DFI. The only drawback with DFI is that as the weather changes your program will need to be changed also. To accomodate the difference in ambient temp, humdity, etc. I personally do not know if the Hondata or Power FC are the same in that sense. If you do decide to go DFI. Contact Job Spetter at Turbo People in Hastings, NY. He is "DFI GOD". No one on the east coast can touch his DFI tuning skills. I belive he's only 2nd to Duttweiler when it comes to DFI tuning.
thanks h-pimp.
i just did a quick "google" search on Turbo People & it seems to be a great shop, <U>and</U> in new york! any idea on the cost of a complete system? Accel DFI's site, http://www.mrgasket.com/dfinew.htm, doesn't have any prices.
i don't really understand why program would have to be changed with the weather. does the tuning need to be that exact?
thanks again

Unfortunately DFI does not compensate for changes in the weather and/or track conditions. Hence, at a domestic event if you stroll through the pits you'll see guys re-tuning their DFI "on the fly" with a laptop. It's not really street friendly if you ask me. Find out a little more about Haltech and Tec II. Those are also decent systems.
As far as cost goes, a complete DFI system can be had for about $1300. Plus installation and tuning. So you're probably looking at $2000 when it's all said and done. Oh, and in regards to Turbo People, they do great work. But it aint cheap. Dealing with the best has it's price. Turbo People is the "Area 51" of the NYC street racing scene. It's home to the fastest street cars in NYC. Period.
My friends Twin Turbo 700+ hp '95 Impala SS was built there. They worked on my Grand National when I had it. And they also built a 900+ hp '96 Impala SS for some guy (Twin Turbo 502 big block) but the owners is in jail and the car is just sitting in the back of Turbo People with a car cover on it. They're very knowledgeable guys and won't even talk to you if your not serious about your ****. They are very selective in regards to what imports they work on. Many Civic/Teg owners have walked in there with a YO YO attitude and were asked to leave and never return.
Again, they're a great shop. But very serious through and through. No rice to be found anywhere!

"autronic", http://www.turbofast.com.au/autronic/autotune.html, has an "auto-tune" option, but i don't see anything for hondas.
it seems like Power FC would be the way to go for a street application. i know one person with DFI that auto-x's a civic. i'll have to get more information from him about what he does for weather conditions. i really liked the idea of tuning on the street rather than on a dyno.
this shop really does seem like the real deal. there car's are all in the 10's or less!!
i'm a long way from taking my car there

Argiris, not sure are you talking about me because I live in LI and autox alot in NY, NJ. I have a black turbo civic with DFI. I didnt reply because H-pimp hit it right on the nail. I had my DFI tuned by Job at Turbo people too...he is simply the best. However he told me I don't need to retuned the dfi during summer...mine was tuned in winter. For more than a year now it has been untouched. Also the new DFI7 just came out and it supose to be a better unit, you might want to check on that also, good luck.

Yeah I heard about the new DFI system, hopefuly it will be more flexible to tune. BTW b18c if Job tuned your car a year ago, did you experience any changes in performance through the winter? Just curious.
The only thing I've experienced is that the car is harder to fire up during the winter when the motor is ice cold. But besides that, I have'nt notice any other differences.
