If you want power gains then you should invest your money in a header with 2,5" collector, this will also make it necessary to get a new cat with a 2,5" flange.
If all you want is a deep sound then go ahead and get an exhaust, do a search for more info on what to get, I'm sure every cat back system available for an R has been discussed already

I've heard many itr's with the Apex N1 and I just love the sound. Nice and deep in the lower register and when you mean it to, it rips.
I really like the sound of my Tanabe Racing Medallion but it definitely has the "bee" sound you speak of, especially in the higher rpm. But with only 1.8 liters are you really expecting a low rumble at 8000 rpm?

True dat. With a decent header & cat combo, you'll get some throaty sound from the motor and will give you way better $-to-hp gain than getting an exhaust.

From what I understand the Mugen still has some bottle necks, therefore there is now way I'd spend $975. IMO I'd keep the exhaust stock for a while.

I have a DC stainless 4-1 with 2.5 inch collector, carsound cat 2.5 in/out and Mugen twin loop. I think it sounds and flows great. The Mugen ex. is perfect for daily driver!
For the money go custom. Kteller8 sells mandrel bent setups for really good prices. Got mine for around $350. The key to not having a bee sounding car is a good resonator with any setup.
