don't mean to offend anyone but this is just another reason why high speed oval racing, especially in an open cockpit car, just isn't safe.

Can we please stop posting this stuff. It's very sad but no offense, I really don't like to see words "Killed in Crash". I have issues with it. In any event, Tony was driving a Toyota at the time of the incident.

This is the first time I've posted one of these. I keep seeing people post stuff like this, so I figure it's acceptable (albeit tragic). My wife sent me the story this morning and I don't like it any more than you do.

Mods can delete at will with no hard feelings.

I think there's value in the reminder that this is fun and all but people get hurt doing it. The greatest quality of this forum is the amount of learning that goes on and we can learn from tragedy.

I agree, and in this case the tragedy sparked a thread on Hutchins/HANS/Isaac devices that might end up saving the life of a forum member. We can't play Ostrich when tragedy strikes.

We should not loose sight of the fact that racing is dangerous; oval, road course, swamp buggy...whatever. Everyone who participates must accept that risk. Considering how far the limits are pushed in motorsports, it is a wonder that there aren't more participant deaths.

The irony is that about 120 of us die EVERY DAY driving around in our cars and we seem to have accepted that risk.

RIP Tony.

I also agree. Although tragic, it does keep my mind on future Hans purchase and reminds me that you don't have to be going 200 mph to be at risk...

Anyone hear any details? I heard that the car got airborne and went over, or through the fence and the cockpit broke completely apart.

Kenny Brack is just damn lucky that his tub stayed intact!

RIP Tony Renna.

Were in a "Motorsports Family"...all of us on this board. And its just tragic when this happens to someone in the "Family" and hopefully some good will come out of it. Additionally the kid was only 26.

If you have issues with people getting killed in race cars, you should probably reexamine what you are looking to get out of the sport. I'm not saying that I'm not afraid to get hurt or worse, killed but you're in a race car driving speeds much greater than on the street. So there is a risk there but so is there driving to work or to see a movie, but we still do it. It's dangerous and if you think not seeing something or putting your fingers in your ears is your way of dealing with it, you are only fooling yourself. You may also be putting yourself and others at risk on the track.

Any death in racing is bad but it was only the 67th death at the speedway since 1909. Just today there have been more than 50 people killed on our local roads with speed limits from 25 to 70 mph. The simple fact is people get killed everyday and we have to deal with that and we improve where we can but nothing will ever be perfect...nothing.

Don't get mad at my post, it's here just to make you think.

My dad, an avid golfer, used to not care very much for the dangers of my club racing activities. Then last year I found an article about how many people had been killed playing golf (struck by lightning) the previous year. A quick cross reference with SCCA and NASA club racing fatalities (excluding pro racing, which to me is certainly in a different category) from the same period showed it to be "safer" than playing golf.

Sure, it was statistical white noise and not scientific at all, but in the end, quite simply, more people died playing golf in 2001 than died amateur club racing. Kinda makes you think a little, and my dad hasn't said another negative word about my racing since (Mom still does though, and unfortunately I can't find any info on deaths while playing Bridge).

Unfortunately I lost my hard drive late last year so I don't have that article anymore. So please don't ask.

People should take this as reality check on the dangers of racing.

I don't see a problem with these posts. I'm glad people post them, because honda-tech is the main site I visit on the web, and I dont get speed, so this is my main source of info.

RIP Tony

I completely agree with your post with the exception of the above statement. Personally, I don't think that is anywhere close to an acceptable statistic. That means there are 7 deaths every 10 years! Obviously if we looked into it, we would find that most of the deaths took place a lot closer to the 1909 end of the timeline, but the fact remains that ovals are just plain dangerous. The speeds are too high, and the walls too close.

not ban them, but change regulations to bring speeds down significantly...

Robin Miller makes exactly that point in a article on rpm.espn.com
