What exactly does a "drop in filter" entail?

My friend with a '00 Nissan Altima put on what he calls a Warm Air Intake (WAI), which is nothing except a K&N Filter connected directly to the intake manifold. No piping whatsoever.
Is this really an "intake" or just a drop in filter? Can you expect some power gains from it? Having driven his car before and after, it seems to have lost some low end power and maybe gained some high end, it's hard to be sure of course... It makes a really low swooshing sound every time he hits the throttle. Sound kinda weird, but he likes it so that's all that matters.

I don't think you can expect much gains without extending the air filter away from the engine. The extra piping is needed so your air filter will suck in colder air and again, away from the engine heat. That's why short ram intake will not get as much gains as cold air intake does. But it does make your car louder because the filter is under the hood verus under the car.
