Default Dissapointment turns into a blessing in disguise (VTC turbo saga lives on!)

So I show up yesterday at SFP to have my Hondata installed/tuned and have the GSR running it's best after all this time. Now I had let the guys there know I had an exahust leak, but there was alot more too it that I didn't know

Once the car was up on the bridge leading to the dyno, one of the guys decided to hunt down the exahust leak which as it turns out was directly on my DP. Why didn't I ever look for it on the DP myself? Because I've had a ton of people tell me "5-bolt DP's never leak..", so much for that. The bottom bolt on the 5-bolt turbine actually runs through the back housing, so in not having the bolt there, I was dumping exahust straight out the turbo.. not too big a deal, but the next problem was.

After swapping the wastegate gasket, one of the SFP guys spots something I never did, I was missing a bolt on the back of the compressor! After pulling a donor bolt off another turbo, we realized why that bolt jumped off, the previous owner stripped the **** out of the compressor and no bolt would catch the threads leaving me when an open housing. Needless to say, Frank at SFP wasn't comfortable tuning like this since it would be a mess and I agreed. The initial idea was to take the turbo to a shop nearby and have a heli-coil inseted, but then it dawned on me... Why spend the $$ and effort to remove mysetup, heli-coil the turbo and reinstall it to get it tuned, only to do it all again when I upgrade the turbo?? That left me with only one option:

I bought a T3/T04E (.63 A/R ext, .60 A/R comp 60-trim) from a friend who was hanging out with me at SFP. The sales pitch went a little something like this:

VTC: "Damn dude I can't belive I just wasted this day, and to fix this turbo now.. it's not worth it to do it all over again... Sell me your turbo?"

FstBlkGti: "Uhh.. how much?"

VTC: "$300 + my turbo."

FstBlkGti: "..ok"

Gotta love friends

So we knocked out the swap last night through 2am with a couple friends, the result:

Just had to clock the turbo a bit to line up the charge pipes and shave the block down (by hand!!) to clear the compressor. Now my only concern is my 460cc RX7's supplying enough fuel for 10-11psi on this new turbo. My friends are being a little over zealous IMO predicting upper 300's at 10psi, personally i'm looking for maybe 300whp (2.5" DP, 2.38" Apex'i N1), SFP here I come

Let me know how it spools. I got 2.5" dp and t3/to4e going on my car with Tanabe exhuast which must be around the same size as yours.

ditto.... damn I was wondering "WHY the heck hasn't dave posted his dyno chart yet... whats taking him so long?"

thats is messed up how you find out that you had a somewhat fucked up turbo & leaking downpipe. That sucks.... I hope you didn't pay too much for it & also didn't you check it out when you got it?

So how you've already moved on to the bigger turbos.....t3t4
haha LOL me and pennie were hoping that you keep your smaller turbo so we could just compare info and what not. Small turbos are fun and can hang but when your wanting 300+ whp.... your going to have to up the displacement or up the turbo and sacrafice spool time.

please do keep us all informed bro. You have 470cc rx7 injectors?.... how did you get them to fit? any moding? I think you'll be fine with 470cc and 300whp but thats just my guess. LOL

later
IM be on how the apexi kit was

Yea dude, I'd like to have stuck it out with the T3, but with all those issues... oh well.

I'll give you a call Charlie (or you call me) regarding the Apex'i kit
