My Subaru 04 STi is coming in this week, and my Type R is not sold yet!!!!! Read details inside.
Here's a problem:
I ordered a 2004 Subaru STi in White from a local dealer. It arrives this week. I spoke to the dealer about my trading the vehicle in. They said "no problem". Well, they also quoted me a potential trade-in. I was content with the trade-in amount. However, the paperwork was not signed as I was not 100% sure I would trade the car in.
NOW, the dealer is not offering the same amount for trade-in. Which of course undercuts the amount I was expecting to get.
Bottom Line:
I Still need to sell my car, and fast!!! This is an excellent opportunity for someon to pick-up a Type R for a very reasonable price. Here is the link to the sale: https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=649250
As you all know this car is very nice!
What you may not know is, why am I buying a Subaru? I am a die-hard Honda fan. But as many of you know I am also building an All-Wheel Drive Acura Integra, which is running but needs refinement. I am buying the Subby as a daily driver and also to help "tune" the AWD Integra.
Also, Braile Auto Development (the company I work with) is developing products for Subaru's and the STi is a project car I am building for a couple magazines.
So, If you guys know of anyone who can provide a good home for the Type R, please have them email me at ppihctyper@hotmail.com with an offer. I am open to "reasonable" suggestions. Who knows, I will probably buy the car back from them one day!

Keep in mind that in many states, there is a sales tax advantage in trading the car in to the dealer, because they only charge sales tax on the difference between the trade-in and the new car. It's not true in California, but it is true in most other states.
For example, let's say the sales tax in your state is 6 percent. If the dealer is offering you $17,000 for the trade-in, this means that you will pay $1020 less in sales tax on the new car puchase. So this is actually a better deal for you than a private party giving you $18,000 for the car.
Just worth taking into account...

Very Very true. The original amount the quoted for trade for the car was 16,500 which brought my tax deferred sale value close to 17,655 without the Recaro seats. I thought this to be fair. Then they changed their tune down to 13,800. This equated to around 14,766.00. That amount is just way to low for me to accept. Especially when the car is awesome and in great condition!
Talk about a let down!

I would wait, and try to find a buyer for the R - don't let them lowball you!

Man I wish I could get a STI for a daily driver

bump for you... I went to the dealer to get an STi with cash in hand ready for a downpayment... until I found out how much my insurance would be. $12,500 a year in NYC. So now I'm stuck without a car.

if you didn't sign any document binding you to the purchase of the sti, then i would suggest you hold your ground on the initial trade-in price you and the dealer had verbally agreed upon. i had this same thing happen to me when i traded in my g2 for my itr. at the first meeting w/ the dealer, we had agreed (verbally) on a trade-in value only to find that they changed their mind upon the second meeting. i told them that they had verbally set forth a trade-in price and that if they were not going to stand by that, i was going to walk. in the end, i was able to get the value of the trade-in.
it will be a balance between how quickly you need the car (i'm sure you had been on a waiting list if i'm not mistaken) and how much more you want to spend. be stern with what you and the dealer initially agreed upon. if you show any sign of urgency to get the sti, they will pounce on this. make them think about it. put the ball back into their court, so to speak.
just some thoughts.

Even if you sign the paperwork until you go get the car you don't technically own. I would stand my ground and tell that bassed on the low ball on the trade in you will have ot tkae you business elsewhere.
there is no waiting list for the STi. Subaru will get you the color you want and the car with the options you want if itsn ot on your lot. they are very accomodating that way.

correct. we just get screwed in income taxes. It is nice not having to pay sales tax though, so I won't complain.
