Default Overheating: How bad is it, and what to check to determine the extent of damage (if any)?

Recently my hatch overheated 3x because of improper install of hondat IM gasket in RACE configuration. I have since fixed the issue with overheating, and when I notice it started to go over the 1/2 way mark towards HOT I turned the heater on full blast to let air out of the engine bay, and cooled the motor down as quickly as possible.....

Now, what *could* be damaged (if anything)?

RagingAngel overheated due to similar circumstances, iirc - what was the outcome?

The thermostat could be broken. It may not open as much as it should when it is hot.

As far as anything else goes you should be fine.
I've noticed doing datalogs with my Hondata setup, that max temp to the right of the gauge is only 220 degrees F (on a dc2). The car is still somewhat safe to operate up in that range, and if you were not driving around for miles on end then I would say that you should be fine.

headgasket, the head and/or block deck can be warped, causing a bad seal in between the head/block.

open up the valve cover and see what color the oil is. if it looks normal then the headgasket should be fine and the head not warped and/or cracked. if the headgasket is blown and/or the head is warped and/or cracked, the oil will look like nesquick, ovaltine, yoohoo, or some other form of chocolate milk, and it'll smell funny.

Yeah, I was hoping that was the case. It was just as you describe. I wasn't ******* it out at all, just cruising along slowly and wtf?! Why is the temp high? HEATER = ON and own comes the temp. *whew*

I'll check under the valve cover to see what she looks like just to be safe. *crosses fingers*

Thanks guys!
