Default what head gasket to buy for

i will be buying a head gasket ina few weeks for my LS with p30 pistons. my first choice is to buy a oem head gasket. i really dont any thing about head gaskets. all i know is that the thinner the gasket the better the C/R. but is safe, is it good 4 a daily driver. oh yeah. i plan to go NOS next year maybe a 40-60 shot

So why not mill the head and go OEM?

go with the OEM Honda HG and use all 3 layers. use copper spray if you will be using N2O or boost, or if you just want to be sure it seals. works very well.

milling the head or using a 2 layer HG isn't always the best idea. using the correct pistons to get your C/R is the way to go. remember that once the material comes off the head surface it can't go back on. i'm sure the P30 pistons will give you a nice increase in compression, just a bit less (roughly .6:1) than the CTR pistons.
and as you mentioned, if you go with a thinner HG or mill the head to increase the C/R, the piston to valve clearance may not be enough depending on the cams you choose and the cam timing adjustments. that's one reason why i use the OEM 3 later HG and don't mill the head unless it's warped.

*why not a 1 layer head gasket?</TD></TR></TABLE>

a couple reasons that i can think of at the moment:

thinner gasket may not hold up over time, especially if it's very a high C/R or the motor sees N2O injection or boost of some sort. (not likely but just an example)

also reduces the valve to piston clearance, which is definantly not good for N/A motors with aggressive cam profiles.

i'm sure some other reasons can be added.

1 or 2 layer is normally used to lower the C/R, but it does lessen the valve to piston clearance. so just watch when using aggressive cam profiles.

1 or 2 layer out of a stock HG. using either the top or bottom, or both together.

or i believe there are some aftermarket ones, maybe Mugen. sorry i can't remember what brand it was that offered a 'thinner HG'.

but the OEM will be the cheapest if you are concerned about $$.
