Owned by my brake pads
I had 4 new tires installed on my car yesterday, and the mechanic noticed that the metal plate that goes behind the brake pads were not installed properly and have moved to a point where they have been carving a line in my rotors. The mechanic removed that metal plate which came with the Hawk HPS brake pads. Those Hawk HPS brake pads were installed when I got my ITR 5 lug conversion installed back in April (and have been used for 3000 miles). The rotors are Brembo Blanks that were on the ITR brakes when I bought them. The line that the metal plate made on the rotor is about 1/8 inch deep as shown in the picture below:

The mechanic said that I may want to replace the rotors just to be safe. Do you guys think that the rotors need to be replaced? If they should be replaced, what could happen if I don't replace them?

Started a brake job on the Scout (rotors = $90 each
) before realizing you had to take the locking hubs completely apart to get the rotors off. Threw in one new pad (grooved backing plate to match grooved rotor) and called it a fuggin' day. Grooves are 1/4" or better deep

Yep. Lived in an apartment by school and only drove it during the weekends. Most of those miles were put on in the summer. I've had my car since Dec. '96 when I turned 16 and it only has 43,500 miles on it.

Is the groove into the rotor or the "hat" part? If its in the braking surface then no worries, if its into the hat, keep an eye on them. That part is not so thick to begin with. Watch for cracks.

It is on the "hat" part. The white arrow is pointed to the line in the pic below:

The mechanic told me that those plates behind the brake pads are there to keep the brakes from squealing. Do all brake pads come with those plates or do only some come with them?

Thanks for letting me know. I just did that and they are going to send me a free replacement.
I have a couple more questions.
1. Does the backing plate coming off have something to do with faulty installation or product defect? If I remember correctly, the backing plate came attached to the pad.
2. Does this only happen to Hawk HPS brake pads or does it happen to other ones as well?
