rattle/vibration@5500 rpm... 01 cbr 600 f4i
As the topic states....I cant figure out if this is normal or not for this bike...It is very slight, but if you start easing on the throttle from idle and creep up to 5500 you can hear a slight rattle/vibration coming from the faring/engine area, then after 6000 rpms, the sound goes away...Any F4I owners or bike mechanics shed any light on this for me...Or is there anyone who would check there f4i for me to see if theres does the same thing????Thanks guys
i get a pretty high frequency vibration when I'm cruising around 80 mph... (i guess that puts me around 7k rpm) but it's never worried me... It's nothing violent... kind of the same feeling you get when your cell phone vibrates. If I'm any higher or lower it goes away the same as if I give it a little more gas. ?
yeah, it almost sounds like the motor is changing tones when this happens...it could be just how it is....If u hold mine right at 5500, you can hear the sound then it goes right away....
I've got the same year F4i and I get the same exact noise at about 5500RPM (a rattling sound). Also when it gets nice and warm, I get a low RPM knocking noise . . . Both of those noises have been there since almost new ( I bought it with 11,000k on it, by my close friend who I bought it from bought it with 2k on it). I also ride with a guy thats got a '01 F4i as well, and his makes the same noise . . . From what I understand, its as much a part of the F4i as the honda wing that comes on the side of it . . .
If it sounds like a piece of metal ratlling in front of a fan then it's your cam chain tensioner & lifter (CCT). It's a design flawed in the F4i, I repleaced mine with a manual CCT from AEM and it's fine.... just need to adjust it every 6k or so.

As vtecc44 said, its the CCT (cam chain tensioner). You either want to replace it with a blue dot factor one or a manual one. They are a BITCH to put in. You have to raise the tank, have special extensions for a ratchet, etc. Install can be anywhere from an hour to five. This is something you definietely want to get replaced, it will do more harm than good if you let it go. Plus you don't have the BB's in a can at 5k-ish anymore.
so does this mean I should look into getting the chain tens. kit???Will it be ok w.o it...I can live with this small noise as long as it is not goin to screw something up...BTW, I called a honda dealer and they said there was no recall on this...Someone told me that there was, but honda said no..

I would worry about it. If it gets bad enough, the chain will skip a tooth and then you can damage your engine with valve to piston slap once you keep spinning the motor out of its proper timing. The equivalent on a car but not to such a wild extent would be snapping your timing belt.
The piece you need is either the stock replacement blue dot part, which is like $45 bucks or so... here's the part and install... http://www.bossturbo.com/cbr/howto/cct/index.html
Or the manual cct which I am going to be purchasing... $50ish http://www.cbrzone.com/sprockets.html
This defect is not a recall, so you may want to try to call your dealer and see if they will do the replacement under warranty (you're going to have to buy the part of course). I called my dealer and they said they'll look into it. Let me know if you have any other questions and what you decide to go with.

Even with a newer CCT from Honda, it will go bad again with time. I bought the same manual CCT from CBRZone and replaced it. It is a pain in the butt to replace it because it's soo hard to reach. You will need a few shorter hex keys, and remove the tank to make room.

Just some pointers when doing it yourself... don't try to rush, and if you end up taking the tank off completely, be extremely careful with the fuel connections... I don't know of the quality of the cbr's but my friend took the tank off of his Triumph because it was leaking a bit (o-ring blew) and when he went to remove the return line, the plastic peice broke... it wasn't a cheap replacement
The site should explain everything else pretty well

How many miles do you have on your bike? I have about 16,000k and I think I just blew it up, and I had that same rattling noise . . .
it has 3800 miles on it...I bought it w/ 1800 on it and the noise was there when I got it....Still no better or worse though...
I took my bike to the shop Tuesday, and today they called and said they're pretty sure that my timing chain skipped a tooth . . . Listen to me when I say, if swapping it out kills that rattle, by all means do it, lest yours suffers the same fate mine did . . .
i called the dealer today, they said the part was around 45 bucks.....i will be fixing this soon...Thanks again guys..
Hey guys, finally decided to put the new cam tens on a couple weeks ago, and fixed the problem...Just wanted to say thanks for all the advice on this topic..
Oh, and by the way, it was not very hard of a job at all..
