what ignition are you using and why? I am trying to see what the ignition of choice is to help me decide what to run on my turbo prelude. Any info would be appreciated.

 

Stock Honda ignition is pretty kick ***. However, I went with an MSD 6AL due to the fact it was cheap and was really the only ignition upgrade I felt needed for the HP levels I was going for.

 

Good question. It seems like most turbo hondas get an aftermarket ignition box long before a stronger ignition is even needed (usually resulting in problems that could have been avoided by leaving the ignition stock). I plan to run a completely stock ignition with iridium plugs until I start seeing some misfire. I would be curious to know what the limits of the stock ignition system are though - who here has a high hp car that doesn't run an aftermarket box?

I upgraded my ignition but regret it... I am running an MSD Digital 6+, MSD cap, and MSD Blaster 2 coil and I have very occasional problems with them. Incredibly difficult to debug as they happen only once a month or less. I should have stayed stock I'm only going for 300-350whp when its all said and done, I should have waited until I broke 300whp to upgrade... Just my opinion

 

under 350 whp generally stock components are perfect. For cars going over the 400 mark sometimes they run into problems and upgrade to MSD or something similar. I will be doing a MSD 6al, blaster coil, and cap. Simply because i doint want to go to the dyno then realize my ignition isnt capable.

But then again cars have made over 500 on completely stock igniton.

 

Advantages are a stronger spark, so you can run tighter plug gaps and make more power without blowing out the spark under boost.

 

Ive had a crane hi-6 for about 7 years, first while the car was street driven for 6 years, and this last year as a track only drag car, and it has been great since day 1.

 

OEM.

 

MSD SCI ( equivalent of a 6A I think ) and Blaster SS coil.... no problem with them for 2 years...

The key is a good instalation with good ground !!!

Agreed. Even the Corky Bell book says that just about every car built since the 80s has a sufficent ignition to support FI applications.

 

Gap your plugs to .025ish and stock will support 400+hp. I am at 315whp for now and have a perfectly smooth dyno plot.

This is partially true. The advantage of aftermarket is a stronger spark so it won't blow out under boost, but it is so you can run a larger rather than tighter plug gap. The stronger spark allows more spark at larger gaps, where the car is easier to idle. My car idles on .025 just fine though, find a good tuner and they will be able to set you up.

Stock here. Have you see dyno comparisons of NA cars usiong a stock ingnitoin system vs. some MSD 6al and coil? It's either the same, the MSD might lose power.

I tried using a stock ignition and it was not enough for my h23a. It started to fail right around 330whp on my old setup.
