OMG: My valve latch nut came off
Just did a valve adustment yesterday, and today when I was driving there was a loud ticking noise from the valve cover area. I went home and took off the valve cover right away to notice, one of the valve latch nut is missing. I tried draining the oil and fishing around for it in the with a magentic pen. No luck at all. I even took out the spark plugs and tried poking around in there. What should I do now?
Please help.
Thanks

Did you look around in the valvetrain area?
Maybe you should try dropping the oil pan
You need to make sure you torque them suckers down to spec

Nobody is going to help this guy out?
You guys make 3 page threads about some stupid carbon fiber hatch but can't help someone out with a legitimate problem?

I figured there must be somebody here that knows more about this then me, If it happened to this guy I figured it's happened to someone else before. *shrugs*
oh well

I gots an ideas
take appart your motor and just do a re-build
but seriously, you'd need to have a better look around in the valvetrain section, spend some good solid time to find it or else....KKAAABBBOOOMMM!!!!!

it can be in your oil passage, on top of the windage tray
i dropped a keeper once, and it was sitting on top of hte tray. not hard to take if off, but takes time
might help if you got a magnetic toy of some sort if its in yoru oil return passages.

drop the pan and look around if you still don't see it drop the tray. or it could be stuck in the return passage. but first look around the valvtrain area. if it made it made it into the pan then it should sta there,as it won't fit through the pick up screen.
my friend got lucky one time and after 3 oil change it was stuck to his spoon drain plug.

If it is not in the head then it probaly fell down one of the oil passages through the block down low to the tray. Try looking all around in the head...there are a lot of crevise areas in it and it could be hiding in one.
thanks soo much for all your help guys. I found the nut this morning using a magnetic antenna. It was at the bottom of the oil pan. Thanks. I am so relieved, coz I just finshed rebuilding the motor.
Glad you found it.
Same thing happened to me at 8 thousand something RPM.
the nut was in the head nicely tuck in a corner. It did no damage.
