Default cowl induction on the R

I was looking around my R today trying to find a way to get cooler air into my engine bay. I noticed in the area right above the battery, there is a rectangular piece of plastic that seems removable. If this piece were removed, there would be a rectangular opening right under the area where the hood ends. It's a fair size opening that could be reasonable to induct air. Anyone had similar thoughts before? Would this idea function?

You will see a Honda from time to time with the hood spaced up in the back, this helps circulate air through the engine bay.

Chris at http://integra.vtec.net/geeser had the same thoughts, but never took it very far.

I noticed that the Realtime R's have the whole back section of under support cut out of the hood to let hot air out (and save weight in the front)
