Timing Belt Question
ok....the haynes and helms manual say to line the crank to TDC and the cam with the sign pointing up.......with tick marks on the sides of the cams to line up as well...
my question is ......after doing so......the crank to TDC is no prob ....but the cam gears.....if you point them up and match the tick marks......can you still throw off the timing????
is putting this on a RIGHT WAY OR WRONG WAY thing or can you actually put this on an entire cam tooth off the belt and the car will work????
its 3am over here and i hope you guys understand what im trying to say
and lets say if i need a timing gun...how would that work or help

It's a Right way Wrong way thing... I've seen a low compression d-series installed a tooth off w/ no problems momentarily, but I would not recommend trying it... Its really not that hard to keep your cam gears aligned, do it right the first time.
You know how to tension the belt right?
You know how to tension the belt right?
well, once you get the motor to top dead center, and you have the timng belt covers, and crank pulley off of the car, all you need to do is loosen the timing belt tensioner bolt about 180 degrees, push the tensioner down to make the belt loose and retighten the tensioner to keep it in the loosened position
now slide the belt off, change the water pump check your seals clean up the area around the timing belt and timing covers, then put your timing belt back on the motor. The service manual shows you all of this.
Tensioning the belt is equally important if you want your motor to run afterwards.
