going to dyno, want to use 3rd gear, same shit for a/f?
Ok i know that you are suppose to dyno in 4th gear beacuse 1:1 closest raito, thus giving true hp.. i know if use 3rd gear i'll get probably more higher hp.. but right now i don't care about hp... i only care about A/F ratio....
correct if i'm wrong but i think the a/f ratio would be the same output in all gears... well at least from 2nd to 5th... so i can use 3rd to tune my a/f right??? i just don't want to strees the car out, 4th gear runs are hard on the engine, probably gonna do like 10 of them so,.....

seems logical, though supposedly the dyno should be able to semi-accuratley calculate your HP in any gear, so I hear.
As far as 4th gear pulls go, I know what you mean. I've still never wound out 4th since i've put the turbo on my d16z6. I think a 4th gear pull is just what she'd need to let go, stock block, pistons throgh the pan

You dyno in 4th because the dyno software auto-corrects to remove gear ratio torque multiplication. 3rd gear makes a larger correction factor than 4th gear because it's farther from 1:1, so therefore the data isn't as accurate - though it should produce very similar numbers.
With 4th gear you should be able to get a steadier air/fuel reading at each point without worrying as much about the monitor's reaction time.
As long as you give the car a good cooldown between each run, 4th should be fine, but if you're set on 3rd, that should be fine too

actually, in my experience, you'll get more HP in 4th VS 3rd.
You ideally want to tune in 4th gear due to the increased load. Not only does this make more power, but it better simulates load you'd encounter in the real world, in addition to giving you more sample time on the a/f. More load also is better for tuning, as the motor will consume more fuel to achieve the same power.
I always tune in 4th with cars generating more than 180whp or better

Thanks for jumping in! I knew there had to be more reasons that everyone used 4th rather than 3rd.
