Default Sub (JLW3v2) sounds like crap sometimes... HELP ME DAMNIT!

I just bought a JL 12w3v2 a few months ago. Installed it along with a Pioneer Premier DEH-P750MP deck and JBL 300.1 amp. I got the box for the sub at Fry's . Whenever i'm bumping it, it doesn't sound as good as my cousin's (10w3), he thinks its my amp or either my box. Then my cousin told me a good box could make your sub sound good and a crappy one to bad, so i'm thinking aobut getting a box thats custom made for the JL sub. Do you guys think its my box putting out the crappy sounds or the amp or what?! I already messed with the sub controls on the deck a bunch.. help!!!!!!

id say it was the box. Im not too familiar with the new JL equipment, but the older stuff required larger than average airspace, may want to compare your spec sheet to the box dimensions.

i don't think it was to far off from the spec sheet when i measured, i think the height was like an inch or two shorter than the spec sheet, and depth.

If your buddies enclosure is removeable then put it in your car and listen to the same songs to see if it still sounds bad or not. This will tell you if it's the amp or deck. I personally think it's the box. What kind of box is it? Do you know what the airspace in it is?

I think it's a little bit of both. I don't really like JBL amps and that amp is probably not even putting out 300 watts. I use to have a JBL 500.1 powering up a 10 inch Infinity Kappa Perfect and it sounded ok.

exterior box dimensions don't apply... find out how thick the wood is, measure the inside, then mutliply the l x w x h and divide it by 1728. That will give you the cubic feet inside the box. From the JL Audio it's rec. to be in a 1-1.5 cubuc foot sealed box and 2-3 cubic feet for a ported box. 300watts is good enough, but if it's not in the right box, you'll never have the full potential of that sub, and can possibly cause damage to it.

It doesn't matter. You can make it round if you want. Just get the internal volume correct.

3/4" MDF is what I used to use when I was in the business.
