buy it from racing supply stores, like ioportracing.com, upracing.com, racerpartswholesale.com. the foam stuff isnt actually ideal, best to really get the harder padding to protect best from high speed impacts. tests have shown even the racer foam is just as good as paper in really high speed accidents. ive got more info in my rollcage faq in my sig.

hmmm gotta spell check that...

I bought the SFI type of padding from Summit Racing. Comes in colrs and has a Velcro mounting system. Cuts easily and you can tie-wrap it if desired. This is not the soft stuff and is actually better. Buy several 1" thick pieces for the main hoop over your head and any bars that your body normally comes in contact with.

I have yet to find the true SFI padding for under $14-15 per 3' stick unless it's on a sale.

...always in stock.

PEGASUS AUTO RACING
14.97 shipped for three pieces

It's for a roll bar, so no contact points near me or my cranium... only concerns for seldom back seat passengers.

Be very careful with your decision. The rules that SCCA and NASA have tell you to protect your body first. Your head is of particular concern. Protecting your arms and legs is second. The soft foam works up to a point. The advantage of the closed cell/dense SFI padding is that it does not take up as much room and is available is different thicknesses. 1" is ideal with the rule stating 1/2" minimum. I used the $15/stick 1" for the head areas and 3/4" for everywhere else. Don't take this wrong-the other stuff was in the car initially, but I found it would not go on in several critical places.

I used Rebco "XLT Mini" padding. $11 for a 3' stick. Same as the SFI stuff but without the certification.

I also have a few brand new sticks of the thick "XLT High Impact" padding in black that I did not use in case anybody wants to buy them.

I have no idea about the certification stuff. But the stuff kinda reminds me of plumbing pipe-insulation, Found at any hardware store. It's designed to wrap around pipes, and comes in different diamaters...

That stuff is fine for keeping your plumbing pipes from freezing but it has no place in a racecar in the last 20 years. You want something to protect your noggin from impact, not keep your rollbar cozy. I have always used the old school but real rollbar padding as the certified stuff was not common when I was racing regularly but it sounds like I need to upgrade now.

CRXLee: Other than the cost, there is significant benefit to the SFI padding. Several sanctioning bodies are leaning toward it anyway. The pad does not wrap around the bar. The brand that Summit offers is JAZ and the certification is on a tag. From what I'm seeing elsewhere this is the way to go.
