When you had the head cleaned, did you have them check the deck to make sure it did not warp? There is a possibility it may have warped near one of the water jackets, it is also possible the block could have warped and needs to be re-decked.
Upon the install of the new gasket, did you get new head studs? Unless you run arp's, honda recommends replacing your head studs with new ones everytime the head is removed due to bolt stretch.

What I would recommend first is killing your friend after he pays for everything to be fixed. That's really fucked up on his behalf. I had a very similar situation happen to me about 2 years ago. You have no clue how much self control I had to have when he came back with my car grinning from ear to ear and when he parked steam started pouring from my engine bay and my water temp gauge was maxed out while my avc-r read .8 bar (peak-hold value).

Sorry to get off topic, I really feel bad for you.

Did you torque the studs in a 2 step sequence in a criss cross pattern? Did you coat the threads with engine oil or moly lube as well?

If you decide to move the head, double check the torque values before removing the head. You might discover the bolts backed out and just needed to be retorqued. I do not know the exact torque value for the b16a with b20 block, but I think the regular b16a requires 61ft-lbs.

On my H series this is how they recommend the torque sequence be followed, it could be different on your motor... I'm not 100% sure- check your manual:

intake: 9 5 1 3 7
exhaust: 8 4 2 6 10

Loosening sequence:
intake: 3 5 9 7 1
exhaust: 2 8 10 6 4
