Need a little help with autometer water temp gauge on DOHC ZC.
I have an electronic water temp gauge that i've been trying to figure out how to hook for a couple of months now...LOL The sending unit that came witht the gauge doesn't fit in the stock location and none of the adapters that came with it fit either. I emailed autometer and they told me to drill and tap the thermo housing but I really don't want to have to do that. Any help is appreciated
im just going to put my sensor in the upper waterneck where the bleeder screw is, since there is already a hole there all i will have to do is tap it out a bit to fit the sensor.
comming from the waterneck it will get a very accurate reading right as teh coolant flows out of the head

Are you sure that you have an ELECTRICAL water temp. gauge? If you really do, you don't need to drill any hole on the thermostat housing, all you need to do is to tap the WIRE from the coolant temperature sensor.
This wire is behind your gauge cluster if you are driving an EF, the wire color is YEL/GRN. It's on the second set of the left side harness behind the cluster which has 10 wires going into the plug.
Hopes this help.

hmmmmmmmm, well i bought a electrical temp gauge and it came with the autometer temp sender.......... i wasnt aware you could just tap into the factory wiring?? how would it be giving you a correct reading???
I've tried just tapping into the wires on the factory sending unit, it doesn't work. The needle on the gague just shoots all the way over to the other side of the gague as soon as i turn the car on. I've looked at using the bleeding screw on the upper waterneck and it didn't fit, but drilling it out and retapping it seems to be the best solution so far. Thanks for the help I appreciatei it.
OK I was out loooking at things this morning and iI think I have been trying to hook it up to the wrong thing. Is the stock sending unit under the distributor or the exhaust cam sensor? Also will taking out the stock sending unit keep the fan from coming on? And one last question what is the normal running temp of the ZC motor?
The fan will still come on, why don't you just tap into one of the coolant lines ?

Sounds like you did not have it grounded properly. If you tapped into the stock wiring it will work, it just won't be accurate.

Well if the stock one is the thing under the distributor the autometer sending unit fit in there just fine. A guy at the AutoZone (were I got my gauge) showd me the wrong place to put it. I told me it went were the sensor under the exhaust cam sensor is. So as long as my fan will still come on I got it hooked up alright. Thanks for all of the help
A word from Autometer...
"Electrical temperature and pressure gauges require the use of a sender matched for the type of gauge in use; the stock sender will only work with the stock gauges. Auto Meter gauges are designed to work with the Auto Meter sender that is included with the gauge."
