Quick Question for all with b-series swaps
i have a j1 trans for my b16a.. at 70 mph you will burn around 5000 rpms v tec the whole time sucks..**** poor gas mileage!
but its great in the qt mile.. if you are a gear head.. swap out the 3rd and 5th in your trans.. i blew my trans and had it rebuilt using 93 gsr 3rd and 5th
lighten my flywheel and im using competition clutch stage 4.. 4th goes quick but its nice on an open highway going from 5th to 4th to pass or big hills..

with my j1 im parked at 4grand doing 70... it only sucks on highway trips, around town and for acceleration purposes its very fun. but turbo im guessin too short??
i have a J1 with a ls 5th gear swap and it is great. Acceleration 1st through 4th is good, and i can cruise at the same rpm that i was when i had my ls transmission attached to it.
as for the turbo thing it seems that as long as you could make traction the shorter geared transmission would be more beneficial. Its been debated all over the place though but thats what id recomend.

you should choose your transmission on how you drive and not whats done to your car.
you would want the S1 if you are more concerned about highway driving and top speeds. but if you want more acceleration then you want the J1 but makes highway crusing a pain since you in VTEC at 70mph

question. i have a j1 with a dual friction clutch. the tranny is going bad real soon. i dont want another j1, i want longer gears, but i want to reuse that tranny. what one would bolt up to my b16 and still use the same clutch? thanks in advance.

I think you are saying you want to reuse the clutch, but you want longer gears. Longer geared trannies for you would be the JDM Y1 or the USDM A1 or S1 (90-91 integra LS/RS/GS). Keep in mind that there is a JDM S1 that is the same as your J1. I'm not sure how to tell the difference other than knowing what car they came off of or opening them up.

Why the hell does every say you need longer gears for turbo cars this is one off the biggest myth i have ever heard and continue to hear shorter gear will always make a car overall acceleration to a point. The point is when ever you are losing traction or shifting too much.
biggest myth? longer gears mean you stay in gear longer. this'll allow more turbo spool to make more power for the engine. Try driving a turbo car with a short-geared b16a tranny, you'll be switching gears before the the turbo is at it's full potential. Short gears are for low-torque, all motor cars.
turboZChatch let's swap trannies. I've got a USDM YS1 from a 92-93 rs/ls/gs, wich is even longer the 90-91 ls trannies. It's perfect for turbo. I would myself, unfortunatly I have to pay for tuition and cannot buy a turbine.

quick comment after reading alot of these posts...he mentioned in the first post he has LS turbo... he won't be in vtec at all. Higher rpm's, yes...which may also be cause for concern in the LS..... There is a reason the LS came with a longer geared tranny.

yes, thats all nice, but look what trannies the guys running 11's are using and you will have your answer. Hint: its not the LS.
you optimize your shifts buy running a different size slick. Of course this all depends on your goals for the car. The car with the tighter geared tranny will be faster though.

I agree...the longer gears wouldn't be a benefit to anything but the actual drivablity of the vehicle and wellbeing of a motor not meant to run consistently in high rpms.
I have driven LS's with stock tranny and one with a B16 tranny and would prefer the B16 tranny ANY day...J1 may be a little on the short side with the turbo...but has anyone asked what turbo you have? If you have a smaller turbo that spools a little quicker, I don't see why you would have issues OTHER than traction and gas milage. I know T25 is too small for a b series turbo, but don't smaller turbos like that get full boost by like 2500 rpm's anyways?? (Could be wrong...but just guessing from what I have read various places)
to put it shortly... I think you will have more fun with the J1, but if you decide you need an LS tranny, I will trade you anytime

This myth drive's me nuts, yet every ricer and their brother wants an LS tranny. Oh well more of the short gears for me!

i like the LS tranny cause of highway driving.
im in 5th gear at 4k and doing 83mph, thats with the long gear YS1.
and for those who dont think the B16 tranny will give better acceleration, take a look at the Laskey Racing's CRX. they have a b18c with b16 tranny and are running 9's

I am running a t3 turbo with an aftermarket exhaust side (.72) I figure I will be fully spooled by 3grand I tend not to really fly around all the time due to the fact that I dont wanna crash into anyone or anything like that so the highway thing im not to woried about I just want to get out of the box nice and fast and be able o make power through out every gear frim what i interprat on the board this tranny will aloow me to accelerate nice and fast but it will more or less fall on its fase on the high way....I am going o use this tranny for a while see how it goes then if I feel the need to I will switch over to als thank you everyone for the good info

for all motor
