Default lost flywheel splash guard - flywheel exposed, any damage?

well I crawled under the car to remove the heat shield since it was rattling like crazy and weeee! I noticed that the flywheel was exposed, apparently the flywheel splash guard/cover is lost. I'll need to get it replaced but just out of curiousity: what kind of damage am I looking at without the flywheel cover? I have no idea how it work and I was wondering if I need to have the tranny fluid replaced after I replace the flywheel cover?

Are you talking about the thin metal cover that goes between the engine stiffiners and the transmission?

I would think that dirt and water getting into the clutch housing area might cause damage to the clutch assembly, bearings and could cause the flywheel and the steel parts of the clutch and pressure plate to rust. Not good...

your fine for a while. even with the cover junk can still get up there. just take it easy till you get a new cover.

I would probably drive another car till you have a replacement to install.... not worth the possibility of damage.

water gets in the trans anyways and rusts everything up. very minute amounts. I once dropped the tranny and out came a puddle of water.
