contrary to popular belief, most car covers are actually harmful. they damage your paint, especially if you leave it on in the rain or snow. the only type of cover which won't do such a thing is made of a "breathable" type of material.
i was told this by my trusted autobody friend. he's been in the business for 20+ years and has had his own shop for the last 10 yrs. it was news to me b/c i thought all car covers were helpful, no matter what. also, i thought that it would be a good idea to leave them on in inclement weather in order to prevent the elements from damaging your paint. how wrong i was...

Here is a simple rule to help you decide. If you are just trying to protect against dust, and keep it clean, don't get a car cover. If you are protecting it from bird crap, tree sap, etc, then get one.
When I had my G1 Integra, the parking stall I was assigned at home was right under a big tree. Nice shade, but there was always major "tree stuff" falling on top of it. Sometimes when it rains, the coloring (of the tree stuff) would come off and stain the paint surface. I got a simple (cheap) car cover for $29 (this was over 10 years ago) and it worked fine to protect against that.
