I would agree with the above...
If you can't afford a good helmet, you can't afford to race!
My brother has a head injury from a car accident, and believe me, you DON'T want that to happen to you!

if i were you, id stick with the loaners at the auto-x events. Cheaper. And why do you need a helmet for dragging? are you even in the 13-12sec range?
well actually, i didnt really know how much helmets are/were.
Rental helmets are like ....disgusting.
Its for autox AND drag, and they require u to wear helmets at the drag strip not matter what around me...

Try HelmetCity.com. That's where I got mine from. I got a Bieffe snell2000 motorcycle helmet for $99.00 shipped. The sales rep I spoke to on the phone was very helpful. I told him I needed the helmet within 10days and they shipped it 2-day for free!

Generally you want to get an automotive helmet for driving activities...
at LEAST 95 rated ... most of those are gone. Should be SA2000.
I sell OMP Prodcuts. Check out their line.

Go to your local motorcycle shop........they should have plenty.
The biggest thing to worry about is making sure they fit properly. Slop in the helmet is a bad thing. (worse than buying a cheap one).
You should be able to get a good open face for ~$100 and a full face for ~$150.
HJC makes good Snell approved helmets in that price range.......then you can step up to the Arai, Bell, Agvs and such.
Make sure you try it on!!

Most tracks will allow Auto or Motorcycle rated helmets - as long as they are Snell approved. The primary difference in an Auto rated helmet is that it has fire retardant materials and design. Motorcycle rated helmets do not require flame redardancy. However motorcycle helmets offer similar impact protection, and they are typically considerably cheaper than Auto rated models. So if you plan on only using it once in a while, a motorcycle helmet might be more attractive to you given your budget. If you plan on hitting the track every weekend, it might be worth the extra money to you to get an Auto rated helmet...

I have a Brand new Shoei Motorcycle helmet for sale if you are interested. Its Candy Apple Red. Let me know. $150.
remember SA95~!
Most groups only accept the two most recent Snell standards. So they require SA95 or SA2000. However, when the SA2005 standards come along, they will stop accepting SA95 helmets.
So get an SA2000 helmet so you don't have to buy another one four years from now if you want to keep racing.

If you're adverse to wearing a rental - just buy a Nomex balaclava (cheap!) and wear it underneath. Take some Febreze with you and spray the inside of the helmet and voila - no more stinky helmet.
Another comment about motorcycle helmets is they tend to be rather heavy. If you're doing serious track driving, your neck muscles will thank you for investing in a light carbon/Kevlar helmet.
DON'T EVER USE A HELMET HAS BEEN THROUGH/INVOLVED IN AN ACCIDENT
