well, seeing as how the "silly season" is upon us for some of us in the north, and will soon be upon the rest of us, i need some new reading material to keep me sane. i have noticed that since i forgot to renew my subscription to Sport Compact Car that i run out of reading material too quickly. i was wondering what other people here read, i particularly enjoy GRM and was wondering if there's another publication out there like it?
my current subscriptions include:
Car and Driver (since i was 16)
European Car
Grassroots Motorsports
i need at least one more. i've had road and track as well as motor trend before, but i feel they are just inferior versions of car and driver so i cancelled them. anyway, suggestions anyone (particularly in the GRM arena)?

Circle Track
you may laugh, but the engineering articles in there are better than GRM, without being unapproachable like Race Car Engineering is. How many of us have DAQ?

EVO is definately the coolest sportscar periodical we can get our hands on. Theres a new GRM-ish magazine called Driving Sports from the northwest, still on its first issue. We'll see how that grows, GRM was hardly a couple dozen pages and staple bound just a few years ago.
another unrelated but cool magazine i like to check out is T3, just a nice gadget/technology magazine with nice stuff to fill the pages.

I am an over 20 year reader of Autoweek and love it if you are looking for timely news and fewer features.
I get probably 30 car mags an month at the office and can't really keep up with them. I try to flip through them all quickly to see trends and catch any nuggets of good stuff but there are way too many Car/Lifestyle-Yo magazines that just make me want to puke. Some are actually funny at how bad they are and others are just a race to see who has the tartiest girls (Puerto Rican "Super Compacto" is a leader but my Spanish is not good).
There have been a huge number of mergers and consolidations in the car magazine business in recent years so most of the magazine titles come from the same basic people and then it is cheaper for them to buy old ones or create new ones to not miss out on a niche. After awhile, the noise factor just gets too high and your eyes glaze over.
My mainstays are: Grassroots Motorsports, Autoweek, and SportsCar. I love Racecar Engineering but too much of the content is out of reach for an underfunded closed wheel club racer in Midwestern America.

Found Evo one day on the news rack, haven't bought anything but that, GRM, and Car and Driver since. Car and Driver is definately, IMO, the best of the mainstream car magazines.
EVO is expensive (eight bux?) but I would rather eat ramen and read Evo that have steak and SCC

Sometimes your local library (public or college/comm college) have some publications that are typically more specialized. I get Automotive Industries once a month which details new manufacturing, assembly, materials and other tech.

Honda Tuning
i think it comes from primedia like scc. there's a fair amount of show/drag/crap, but they make an effort to thoroughly document tech stuff, complete with pictures. i like the hybrid tech especially, and their motor build-ups. and at least it's all honda.
periodical may be too strong a word, tho. it doesn't even have a spine.
to re-establish my credibility, i get grm & scc as well, and pick up r&t, c&d, & sports car every now and then.
yes, i spend a lot of time on the toilet.

sounds like EVO is my new rag.
i don't have a honda, so honda-tuning doesn't appeal to me. and for one reason or another, i'm not big into rally, so that doesn't do it for me either.
i might check out race car engineering as well.

Somebody in the lab I work in brought in "TCR," for Tuner Car Reports (I think that's how it works). The slogan is something like "No girls, no gimmicks." I was skeptical...and found the usual typos and grammatical errors...but in this was real dyno results for real parts. Actually looked pretty good. Next time I see it I'll pick it up.
Sports Car International is another mag that I've always enjoyed. Brilliant photography (Scott [?] Dahlquist I think) and good writing that actually talks to driving a car on a race track. The "Affordable Sports" or whatever they call it, in the back, also describes monthly a genre of used car that is good for those of us afflicted by the Car Disease. I've seen SE-Rs, AE86s, MR2s, and other neat old cars featured there.

HOT ROD It's always had great tech insigh, and product reviews. The editors (in my opinion) are much more respectable/knowledgeable than those from magazines like SCC.
Also, in the past year (particularly the past 4 months or so), they have made the commitment to cover import / sport compact performance vehicles. They even mentioned a 9-second AWD eclipse PROJECT car.
Any magazine with a chick on the cover doesn't get my vote.

If you were stranded on a desert island......
I use to get a fair number of car mags (at least 4/month). During my recent bout with unemployment, I pared it down to the bare essentials: GRM and C&D, the 2 best rags in their field
Sounds like I need to find EVO....
