Default Looking to get a motor donated, please read!

In the spring I want to go SOHC turbo, but before that happens I have a lot to learn. Knowing this, a friend of mine and I decided that we want to tear down and rebuild a SOHC Vtec in his basement over the winter and test it out in my current car (EK civic dx). Now, I realize that we'll need a obd2 vtec ecu if we end up gettign a y8, and an obd1 vtec ecu and an obd1 - obd2 jumperif we get the z6 in order to test this out in my car. However, we're hoping that with your help we can keep the costs down so that everything we have to buy can be purchased straight away. What we want to do is teardown and rebuild the engine and once we get it built we want to dyno it (we can probably get a friend to help us with this, so cost is minimal) and then do some porting and polishing on our own to see what kind of gains we get etc.

The thing is, we are both young guys and don't have a lot of money to spend on a project like this, mostly becuase we are saving vigoursly to work on our own cars (well, I'll be buying a new one to work on, but you get me...). So, what I'm hoping for is some kind person out there to donate to us a running or cheaply repairable vtec longblock and whatever else you can (anything we can learn from or use to get this going! ecu, tranny, whatever). We'd prefer it to be around southwest michigan becuase of shipping costs, but would definitely look at other options.

If in the spring when we are done with this I end up using it becuase we (somehow) get it running great then I'll send the doner some money that I had saved for the swap, and if we end up selling it we'll give you all of the profit (cost of the parts we had to buy will be deducted). We just want to learn from this!

We both thank you so much in advance, and look forward to reading what you guys have to offer.

EDIT: Just wanted to mention that we have most of the tools we'll need for this, plus a haynes manual w/ a teardown/rebuild section, plus a few guys online that can help us out when needed (via digital camera on our end)

Get a Helms ............... I doubt you'll be getting a free, working v-tec longblock, especially since you're ........... <TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD>Quote, originally posted by Atheist &raquo;</TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote">both young guys and don't have a lot of money to spend on a project like this</TD></TR></TABLE>
Since you're asking for a free motor and chastizing people that respond to this post.......... Good Luck

Why not get a blown motor, for free, and rebuild it? Since you want to learn. No one on H-T is going to give you a v-tec engine for free. maybe a d15b7 or d16y7 but not anything more.

I don't feel as though I've chastized anybody, to be honest.

And we'd really prefer to work with vtec to better understand the technology. We wouldnt mind an engine that didnt work as long as we could repair it to a working state for a decent ammount of money.

I know it seems like a lot to ask, and really it is, I'm just hoping someone out there will help us out.

you wanna learn...there is this great place called a junkyard....you rip apart motors and dont have to put them back together!!! plus if you break something...well u just move onto the next car hehehe...

and also do this great thing called reading!!! youll learn a lot more about engines by reading than doing hands on ****...yes i do understand takin apart motors isnt all that complicated...its really just bolts and nuts....its knowing how it runs and works that makes the engine a true work of art!

I don't really agree with anything you said. I want to teardown and rebuild an engine, start to finish, and see what kind of gains I can get and just getting a perfect understanding of how things go together.

And as far as reading goes, nothing beats experience IMO. I get how an engine works, I've done countless hours of reading on that, but now I need to see all of the parts and peices and get some experience points. If what you said was correct, then someone who has built an engine before and someone who had read about building an engine should be able to get it done equally well and in an equally timly manner, but we all know that isn't true.

Anyway, anyone got anything else for us? Maybe just something cheap?
