Default OBD1 or OBD2, does it matter? Which would you choose for a project car

im looking to buy a project car. a del sol to be honest. its a bit relevant because del sols only came in obd2 for 96-97. i REALLY am not an engine guy, ive been NA with my non-OBD crx's, so i dont really know what the differences will be. so im wondering if i should be looking to stay away from the OBD2 cars, or actually seek them out because theyre going to be better in SOME way. or really doesnt matter.

i am not looking to know whats better, eg Z6 vs Y8. the consensus seems to be Z6. but can you put a Z6 in a OBD2 harness? and then what about adding a vtec engine to a non vtec harness, just a 1 wire addition? because most likely to find the cheapest project car, it will probably be a non vtec S model.

or it all just doesnt make a difference? im thinking since i know id EVENTUALLY run a STOCK Z6, id probably just buy a 93-95. but id rather buy a newer car if it all doesnt matter and the engine it comes with is going to be tossed anyway.

and does anyone happen to know if the chassis was different in any minor way from 95 to 96 on del sols? any extra reinforcement, bumper supports or whatever? i know the front bumper changed (and looks the best to be honest). and can anyone confirm the 96-97 bumper cover fits fine on a 93-95?

i know this is seems like a noob question, if there are any write ups or whatever that answers any concerns, please post them. thanks.

someone just pointed out that for smog reasons im better off with OBD1. i am in california too.

i should have stated the goal is to make it a track car but not a trailer queen. so it needs to be registered.

if i know i want a Z6 eventually, i need to start with a 93-95 EH6 then huh?

still want a confirmation on the bumper question. thanks.

In Cali you probably want to start with the Z6 as I'm pretty sure you won't pass smog with an older engine in a newer car. The VTEC wiring is a simple two wire conversion from the VTEC solenoid and pressure switch to the ECU. An additional 3rd wire will need to be grounded from the pressure switch. Check my sig below if you need any wiring help.

yeah, good point about the older engine in newer car too. i dont think i can get away with a Z6 in a EG1 VIN either.

hmm well that pretty much settles it. makes it easier to search, but harder to find a manual Si in my price range.

and looks like the bumpers interchange. had to search a few years back, seems like you guys got tired of answering the question... https://honda-tech.com/forums/showth...del+sol+bumper

If you're in California go with an OBD1 chassis. Most other places it doesn't matter you can just run a conversion harness.

OBD-1 cel codes are easier to read,if it makes any difference to you. OBD-1 has great tune-ability.

i don't think 96+ hood bonnet will fit on a 93-95 civic 'cause the front bumper cover is made to fit that body. 93-95 have smaller head lights and thinner fenders. i have a friend w/ a 98 civic and i have a 92 complete front bumper cover. we're meeting at 5 to chill, i'll see if it fits if you want??
