Default stripping/painting wheels

I'd like to strip and paint my 89 CRX Si rims over the winter (rolling on steelies right now ).

Question: Would aircraft coating remover (the one we use for valve covers) take the stock finish off? Would it hurt the tire?

Does anyone have any pics of refinished rims? How about some recommendations for colour? (Other than black, I know what those look like - Raene has these).

The only way to properly strip a wheel is to have the tire off!
The coating removers do work well at getting the clearcoat off the wheel along with the stock paint. I will suggest that you find a professional powder coating shop/wheel repair-they can show you colors available and when it is done is ultra durable, but not cheap.

I painted my slipstreams myself, they were black and were all chipped when I bought the car so I just taped off the tires and sanded the **** out of the rims and sprayed 4 coats of white rim paint and 2 clear coats, turned out great and a lot better than before and cost me under 20 bucks and a few hours work

I wouldnt get that aircraft remover near the tires!! I stripped the paint off of some steelies with the tires on and it turned the tires brown!! I mean not too bad or anything it was just along the edges where I got some overspray onto them but if you have good tires I would recommend taking them off and plus I dont know if it eats away the rubber or not?? So I would be leary of the valves as well.

But I do know though that the aircraft remover will remove the clear coat and the paint you might have to do it a few times but it will eventually take all of the paint off.

As for a color there are plenty of colors you can paint it it just depends on what you want.

I got sick of my hubcaps flaking, so I used spray on paint remover and then painted them a graphite grey. They look kinda cool. I have no clue why I posted that.

i highly recommend taking the tires off. it will cost like 30 or 40 bucks to have them taken off and put on but they will look better. its the little things that count.

Aircraft remover is definitly not good for tires. I suggest either taping off tires or just sanding. The thing im wondering is what to use to fill gashes on rims? Jb weld stuff?
