Default 91 Accord Transmission Problem

My 91 Accord EX's 'S' light started flashing and the car would shift directly into 3rd gear. I brought it to a mechanic and he told me I needed a new TCU. He also said I need a new solenoid that mounts on the side of the transmission. I replaced the computer, but the car still revs pretty high before shifting. What kind of solenoid needs to be replaced. There is a lower and upper solenoid. One shift solenoid, lower, and one lock-up solenoid upper. Which do I need and how hard is it to be replaced? Thank for any help....

I have the same problem with a 90' accord EX. Did you replace the solenoid? And if you don't mind me asking how much did you spend. but to answer your question. I heard that honda's wait to shift because they want to make sure you have enough horsepower to get up hills. This car usually changes around 3,000 - 3,200 rpms which is normal. Unless ofcourse the s light is blinking. and yes there are two solenoids upper and lower. also this site is pretty awsome for troubleshooting codes.

thanks

Disconnect electrical connectors to solenoids, should have 12-24Ω resistance from solenoid connector to ground.
Apply battery voltage to each solenoid terminal, each solenoid should make an audible 'click'.
Solenoid connectors, face open end of connector with locking tab rotated up. Solenoids are [A][_][B] for both solenoids.

Reconnect solenoids.

While driving the car you should see the following by back probing the solenoids.

Lower set of solenoids are for shifting.
1st- A OFF B ON
2nd- A ON B ON
3rd- A ON B OFF (Reverse as well)
4th- A OFF B OFF

Upper pair are for Lockup control.
OFF- A OFF B OFF
Partial- A ON B OFF
Half- A ON B ON
Full A ON B ON
Decel A ON B ON/OFF cycling.
