Anyone know the progamming sequence for 98" Accord transponder keys?
I believe it's a matter of getting the car's ECU to recognize the new key, as opposed to actually programming it. I think newer models require key progamming. Any thoughts?

 

I'm not sure but are you referring to the immobilizer? With the OBD2, the accords had a built-in immobilizer into the ecu/ecm. You need to get the ecu/ecm reprogrammed, probably by the dealer.

 

You do indeed have to go to the dealer to get the new key/keys programmed as they have computer chips in the heads of the keys.

You should also make sure you bring ALL of the keys you have for the car. Any keys that you do not bring with you will no longer work once the new keys are programmed.

 

Either way, transponder or remote, you are programming the car to accept the key.

The transponder is embedded in the head of the key itself, that's for the immobilizer. Dealer has to do this, I believe.

If you're talking about the remote for unlocking the doors & (dis)arming the alarm, here's the method...
1) Unlock Doors
2) Turn ignition key to "ON" position (II)
3) Press the "LOCK" or "UNLOCK" button on the remote
4) Turn the ignition key to the "OFF" position (0, I)
5) Turn the ignition key to the "ON" position
6) Press lock or unlock
7) Turn key to off position
8) on position
9) lock or unlock
10) off position
11) on position
12)lock or unlock - doors should cycle to indicate successful programming. If you only have one remote, turn ignition to off or don't touch anything. if you have 2+ remotes, go to 13:
13) lock on each transmitter that you need to program

*Steps 2-12 must be performed within 5 seconds of each other. Step 13 can be performed within 10 seconds of step 12. If it doesn't work, give me a yell

 

Any of you guys know the approximate price for the keys? I got a used '99 and it only came with one key....

 

Yea, my local dealer want's $25 per key. I've heard others are as high as $38.
I bought 2 blanks through the mail, before I knew they had transponders in them. So know I'm stuck with 2 blanks I can't use that don't work.

 

Well, I understand that extra or replacement keys for 98' or 99' Accords need to be recognized by some way by the ECU. For some vehicles it's a matter doing a sequence of steps with the original key and new key. I did'nt know if 98' Accords are like that.......

 

In my area, the T-5 keys are about $20. The dealer's parts department will cut a new key for you and duplicate it from a working key. No need to reprogram the ECM (we charge $70 + keys to reprogram ECM).

Yea, that's how they do it. But you also need one of Hondas scan tools.

If they have T5 stamped on them, any Honda parts department should be able to cut and program them for you. (Like AngryTroll said.)
