Default Tow rig questions. Anyone have experience with 1980's suburban with 6.2 diesel?

I found a 1989 GMC Suburban with a 6.2 Diesel for $1000.

The rig runs pretty strong, seems to shift smooth. It has a few dents here and there. The guy has owned it for 10 years and driven it daily. It has about 200k miles on it. Looking for opinions and input.

Run! don't walk away. Those old 6.2s are noisy, smoky, under powered and cannot compare to newer diesels.

IIRC, the 6.5L TD is much, much better (they use it in the Hummer still).

hmmm. Would I be better off with an older gasser? (think $2000 price range here)

Perhaps an old F150?

what he said. this is the kind of truck that makes people want to not buy diesels.

You can't run away fast enough!!!

Those engines were terrible. Bacically just a slightly oversized 350 running 22:1 compression or whatever Diesels run at. Lots of problems with injection system, parts are not cheap, and they are really slugs when you put some weight behind them.

There's no such thing as a good $1000 tow vehicle. You've got to spend at least $3000 to even start getting into something reasonably capable and reliable.

I have lots of connections in the car industry so I can pick up a 3-4K tow rig for $1000 or even less. $2000 will ****** me up a $5000-6000 tow rig (retail pricing).

Thanks for the input on the 6.2 diesel. I am sprinting away as we speak.
