Default B18c buildup question

I have searched but am still a little confused, the time has come for a rebuild and need help on which would be the best option.

i will be throwing in ctr pistons .025 over for sure but the part i was debating is should i throw in a ls crank and rods.

i heard this is a good mod to do for building up more torque, but was concerned on valve clearance.

All this will be on gsr block and gsr head

I`d just keep your GSR Crank and Rods.

keep the gsr crank...use the ctr pistions & get some ITR rods..or u can use the gsr rods if u get them shotpeened

why would you guys say to do that, alot of people have been saying nothing but good things about puting an ls crank in a gsr. Theres always room for more torque, right?

The torque difference is not that great. We are talking about 1.8mm of stroke here. That's 37cc more displacement for changing the crank, rods, rod bearings, and possibly requiring modifications to the pistons, depending on which pistons you choose. The oil squirters must also be modified, since the LS crank will hit them. Seems like quite alot of hassle for not much to show.

serious, the way people talk about it, it seemed like it would make a world of difference.

the gsr has a nice stroke, not too long so you can still make nice top end, but not to small so it has no tq. id rather put a type r crank in there.... type r crank has more counterweights ie better to rev high thats why im recommending it...

Yeah it gets overhyped IMO. If you look at the specs most oft cited for the engines the B18c1 often shows the same or more torque than the B18a/b, just at higher RPMs. Like this:

B18b1 127@5200
B18c1 128@6200

In all fairness to the LS motor though the b18c1 does come stock with .8 more compression.

but the type r crank is heavier, could i still use my gsr rods? or should i just go with the type r ones to mate with the ctr pistons?

If you already have a GSR crank just have it inspected and balanced and call it a day.

For the rods either GSR or ITR will work. The ITR rods are lighter and stronger. If you stick with the GSR rods you have to use the wrist pins from your GSR slugs as I recall. Are you changing your bearings while you're in there?

of course im changing all seals, bearings, and oil pump and stuff. so the ctr pistons should give me no worrys on valve clearance right?

are the ctr pistons pretty good in withstanding the stress of a high compression motor that sees a 50 shot of nitrous occasionally ? or should i just go with high compression forged pistons

I'd go with forged pistons if you're planning on gettin' on the giggle juice.

I wouldnt throw anything around especially if there engine parts.. however if you increase your stroke from 87 to 89mm your car will make more hp and be faster.. but you will need the ls rods.. But that setup works well if done correctly..

What are you going to do with this motor? Drag? Road/Race? I wouldnt waste my time putting in the LS crank in a GSR block. You will gain some low end torque with the bigger stroke, however you change the R/S ratio which will decrease how high your engine can rev safely. Personally, I would stick with the GSR block/crank/rods and maybe go with JDM ITR pistons....but if you want a little more CR then go with CTRs. This will maintain reliability and depending on other mods to the head and boltons you should have a block that will easily support 190whp or more. Good Luck!

Also....I agree that if you want to run Nitrous go with forged pistons...but isnt this an "ALL MOTOR" forum....keep it real

so you guys run type r rods safely on 200 - 240 whp motors? should those be sufficient.
the reason i mentioned about the nitrous is because it would be nice to know or not if i could get a little 50 shot if i needed to for that little extra boost, you know.

My plan for the motor is a daily driven car thats pretty streetable, tons of tuning of course and i will be taking to the track frequently.

A wet 50 shot will be fine on the ctr's. Dry, I'm not sure.

whats the code for the ctr pistons, are they p73's? Would a gsr block yield a different Compression ratio compared to a type r block both with a gsr head?
