Quick question (gear oil)
Hello,
I have an '88' CRX with a ZC engine and just recently the trans. is becoming hard to shift and grinds occaisonally. My friend who's a mechanic says to change out the oil and put in a good oil for Honda tranny's.
Does anyone know what's the best stuff to use in an old "Si" tranny?? I currently have engine oil in there (10w40).
thanks in advance...

DO NOT put synchromesh in your honda transmission. It is very thick (similar to 75-90 rear-end lube). use only 10w30 non-synthetic or Honda MTF. You can use synchromesh in manual trannies such as Toyota, Mitsubishi, and Nissan, which all call for 75w90, but since hondas call for 10w30 or Honda MTF (which are much thinner), use only those.
thanks man, but do you think that the Honda MTF oil will smooth out my shifting problem?? I was thinking that the 10w40 engine oil I was using thinned out and maybe a thicker oil would smooth things out.
thanks....
thanks....

How bout that lucas oil transmission repair stuff? A lot of Honda guys said that **** blew up their tranny... i've talked to a few people that said 10w40 helped their tranny not grind as much, but it seems a little too thick for me.

Yeah, I agree the stuff may be too thick especially once it gets really cold outside shifting can actually get quick hard...
Thanks so far for everyones input....

i switched my gear oil (i believe the original in the trans) for some fresh honda mtf about a month ago. i didnt notice any change at first but now its been about 2000km and shifting is smooth and it cured the notchiness of my third gear
still got to take it easy on high rpm shifts into third but for the price it gets two thumbs up from me

Hahaha, I have to use GL-5 in my b tranny. It sucks for shifting and doesn't quiet down the diff at all, but man it locks up awesome
I tried the redline with a half bottle of friction modifier once, made the trans quiet, but it ground a little into every gear. The first stage on a problem tranny is to use honda genuine MTF. If that still isn't working you can try using the valvoline maxlife 10w30, it contains all of the additives and friction modifiers like the honda fluid but is slightly thicker. Then for serious problem trannies use the GM synchromesh, basicly at that point you've got nothing to lose any way.

sweet thread, this cleared up my questions completely......... tomorrow im off to the honda dealership.
btw: whats the easiest way to change the trans fluid? especially since the drain plug is vertical, would you use a normal grease gun witha manual pump? thanx
