remanufactured axles
hey folks. I have a Prelude Type SH that I run at track days 5-6 times a year. I need to get a new axle, and was wondering if any of you have ever used reman axles in your cars that see track/autox use. I'm just worried that that all that abuse will quickly destroy a reman axle. The reman axle costs $80, while the Honda axle I can get for $200. Any suggestions?
i replaced both front axels last time i was at VIR. i didnt finish in time to get her out on track so i dont know how they would hold up, but the fact that i was able to source both a spare left and right axel from other HC racers in the paddock tells me that they're alright to use... then again, the fact that they keep spare axels around also tells me that they are prone to failure as well... hmmm... take what you will from that.
I have 2 of them in my ITA CRX.. Both have been flawless.. and warrantied for life! So to me as long as they dont blow out during a race ( small chance.. they may die and need to be changed after...) then its good enough.. But for track days i think you will be fine!
I will NEVER get autozone/advance/whatever generic axles.. Must have put 10 different ones on the accord/prelude, only to have them vibrate.. RAXLES are equalivulant to OEM and cheaper.. http://www.raxles.com (why arn't they sponsoring ECHC again?

thanks. just talked to Marty, and he recommended using the stock Honda boots (on your advice?) on top of their heavy duty axles.
Seems like a pretty nice guy.

Advanced Auto and places like that sell several different kinds of axles. They have the cheap remans ones and the new ones for a few $$ more. I believe the better ones are CCT or something like that.
Just stay away from the cheapos and you'll be fine.

I bought an AutoZone axle for one of my race weekends (VIR). It committed suicide in two days. Outer joint completely seized and turned that nice purple color. Inner joint imploded as well.
Brand new reman and its trash in two days. Never again - I'm going back to raxles.

thanks for the posts guys. Unfortunately, due to time constraints (plus I didn't see Corey's and Karl's replies) I bought the $80 Autozone axle. I wanted to buy the raxle one, but @ $140, I didn't think it was worth it at the time... man I hope this isn't a huge mistake I just made... If the Autozone axle vibrates, do you think they will let me return it? In the immortal words of Homer J. Simpson... DOH! I hope they don't fail at the track... I am my own tow vehicle...
BTW, Honda does NOT sell Type SH axles for $200. Apparently, you cannot buy a complete assembly. You can buy the outer joint and axleshaft for $275 list, and then you have to buy the inner joint and housing for ANOTHER $275 list. Bend me over and use LOTS of lube please...

I forgot more about hondas then you will ever know....

I worked at a shop and could get any remanufactured axle for $50. When it takes 20 minutes to swap an axle, why pay more? I've never broken an axle, only torn a few boots, so I just swap the axles to save time.
If you're going through CV-joints that fast, your car may be lowered to much, and the constant angle on the joint may be hard on it.

I wouldn't worry about the Autozone axle, if it vibrates, bitch em out, and return it, I've never had an issue though.
