Default 92 Civic Transmission...

Hmmm... recently my transmission (100% stock manual 5-speed) transmission has been making a strange noise... it is most noticeable when the car is not moving, and I have it in neutral, and the cluch is not pressed in. When I press the clutch in, it stops. Anyone have any ideas on what is up? My car is lightly modified... Intake, Headers, Strut Tower Brace...

Thanks for your ideas in advance...

I can't explain what it sounds like, but I have the same sound out of my Si's tranny. I know that it's nothing to worry about, it's just the clutch spinning around in there.

it might be something to worry about if the clutch isn't fully disengaging

my car is making a similar noise.. Its gotten so loud that i can hear it inside the car, but it stops the second you put the clutch in. I thought that it was the throw out bearing, but i took it to a shop, they put in a new clutch and replaced the bearing, and the noise diddnt go away. They werent really sure what it was, but said that its a bearing inside the tranny and suggested i replace the tranny. THe car goes through gears just fine, but its noisy as hell. Mine has gotten to the point that it sounds like ice being chopped in a blender. i have to turn the car off at drive thru's so they can hear me over the speaker!
If you find anything out-please let me know-but i can assure you all its going to do is get worse. Im actually afraid t0o drive my car cause i think it might go out, whatever it is..
is your car an ex or Si? mine has a vtec d16y8 from a 96 ex in it. Just thought that maybee its an issue with the gearing or something-ive heard of a lot of people loosing 2nd gear in those cars..

Hmm I did check the tranny fluid (its a hydro tranny so it was easy to check). I took mine to a shop too, and they told me that it was a bearing. They suggested getting a new one too. Hmmm.... I may go shopping at the local junkyards here in the near future... it's a LX btw...

you mean the throw out bearing is making that noise?
Well then let me ask a question. I have a problem that when I shift from 2>3 or 3>4 I can put it into gear either around 4500-5000RPM or at redline with out scratching gears. If I try to put it into gear anywhere in between 4500RPM and reline, I scratch 3rd. Is this a symptom of a bad throw out bearing?

i thought mine was a bad throw out bearing, but it wasnt. its something internal.
for your gear grinding problem, id suggest changing your tranny oil. Its a special honda fluid so you have to get it from the dealer. My car had the same problem, and it argued with me about going into first. AFter i changed the fluid it practically falls into gears-nice and smooth, but the internal bearing noise is something un-related.
like i said, it doesnt have any problems shifting at all, its just noisey and that cant be good.

See, I have no problem shifting just like my previous post, the only time it grinds 3 & 4 is if I shift above 4500RPM, but below redline. So you say that the Honda MTF will help out. I am running non-synthetic 5W-30 in my tranny right now. If you think that the Honda MTF will make that big of a difference then I may as well try it out. I mean it can't hurt.

ahhh, my bad- it totaly mis read that. uhhmm, i dont know if it will help or not, mine was grinding just about every shift regaurdless of the RPM's. but its worth a shot. I was told by the dealer that the honda MTF was the only thing that should be in there because conventional oil isnt the same. They could be full of crap though, it is after all the dealership, and weve all dealt with them before..
You may want to think about flushing and filling your hydrolic clutch fluid as well(dot 3 brake fluid). I honestly dont know it that will help either, but if nothing else its preventive maintanance, and i did notice a difference after i did it.
It could also be a synchro starting to go bad. do you ever hear any whineing noises when you drive?

I guess all I can do is give it a shot. The only thing that I have put into my tranny since I have had the car has been 5W-30, not and Honda MTF at all. I want to know how refilling the clutch would help the feel of the pedal. I want to put DOT 5 in there. Has anybody done this, and does it make a noticeable difference? Also, how much fluid does it take to totally fill the clutch system from empty??

Also JHMeg8, no there is not whining noises when I drive, the only problem that I have what so-ever with that thing is the grinding when I **** between those RPM's.
