i broke in my new impact wrench by snapping two wheels studs. 6th gen civic - help me.
i make it habit of researching here on h-t before i tackle any projects on my car, or before making any major purchases. you would think i know better...
long story short, i fell into a great deal on an air compressor, and spoiled myself and maxed out my wife's sears card buying an impact wrench. 600 lb/ft in reverse! bring on those lugnuts.
when i got home last night from sears, to 'test' it out, i blasted off some lugnuts on the lowest setting, no problem. when i put them back, being lazy and buzzing from dinner/drinks, i 'got them started' with the impact wrench and then torqued them properly. all seemed fine.
today i went out to the garage, jacked up the car and blasted off the same lugnuts. i managed to break off a stud on each side of the fronts. good ******* start.
i searched all the 'wheel stud' posts, and none seem to deal with 6th gen civics. i've learned so far that the spindle nut is 32mm (which i have to go back to sears to purchase). i've poured over my newly acquired helms, and it appears that i can just blast off that nut, pull off the hub, bang out the busted stud, replace it with a new one, and put it back on. all these threads i'm reading talk about not being able to remove the hub without the bearing, replacing the bearing, etc, which seems to be the norm for cars other than 6th gen civics.
does anyone have experience replacing busted studs on 6th gen civics, and if so, can you tell me your story? i promise to make this a great how-to thread, with pics, once i'm done.
thanks in advance.
I have no input specific to 6th gens but just FYI, on 92-95's ( and possibly up) You could just shave a bit off of the stud when replacing them so that they will slide in. Its sounds somewhat "ghetto" but it prevented me from removing the bearing as you stated. Also, a local honda shop suggested it and its worked fine. I just figured I would add this because you may be the first on here thats screwed up 6th gen lugs
j/k
**** happens! You can just afford a 6th geb
EDIT: Not the threaded portion of the stud, but the head section.
IE "D" insdead of "O"

i havent changed studs on a civic, but what i do is take the disc rotor off and you should be able to see all the studs, just get a hammer and bang out the broken remaining studs, put your new studs in as far as it will go in, then i use a stud installer tool, put the big looking like washer on the new stud then put the lug nut on the stud and tighten it with the impact gun. that should securely tighten you're new stud on.
thats about it, if anybody else wants to comment on it, then please do.

well, i finally tracked down a 32mm socket at autozone (sears doesn't stock it), so i just have to pick up some studs (no gay jokes, please) at the dealer tomorrow. anyone else care to contribute? i can't be the only one who broke studs on his 6th gen civic...
well, i'm able to get the spindle nut off no problem, but the hub is there to stay. rumor has is that i have to have it pressed out, along with the bearing.
anyone with first hand experience that wants to tell me the secret to replacing the studs without spending an arm and a leg?
there is a member selling a complete used knuckle/hub/rotor in my area, and i'm considering buying it just to save myself the trouble.
I had it done by a machine shop, I took the front suspension off took it into the shop and they replaced 2 studs for 20 bucks. They said there was about a 50/50 chance that when removing the bearing it could get damaged but luckily everything worked out and nothing had to be replaced
i don't know if i'm that lucky, but if the seller doesn't still have the part, i may have to do just that. it doesn't look too hard to removethe entire knuckle - i just won't have a car for a day or so. thanks for your help.
