Default Shifter counter weight was cut off? What to replace?

Shop said the guy before me cut the counter weight under my shifter, it's making my car give off a grinding/vibrating sound when i'm in 1st gear at like 10mph. Does anyone know where this counter weight is and what it is connected to? Do i need to replace a shift linkage? Maybe i can cut one off a junk yard and weld it back on.

Thanks,
Vince

The counter weight is part of the shift linkage... I used a hack-saw to cut mine off because it hit my exhaust piping when I had my short shifter installed. I have since replaced my SS with the stock shifter, but I still don't have the counter wieght there... Mine makes wierd noises at times as well.

You can replace the counter weight by replacing the entire radius rod(i think, or maybe it's the torque rod? heh). It's a really simple procedure. You need to look at it to know what I'm talking about - the counter weight is actually an extension of the radius rod that extends past the bottom of the shift lever. Once you see where it is, then head to the nearest junkyard and pull off the necessary linkage component.

i did the same thing.. cut that weight off because of a short shifter, but i don't have any sounds or weird vibrations.. maybe i just got lucky. but yeah, it looks like a black, heavy solid cylinder on the end of the torque rod.. closest to the rear of the car.

I cut that thing off too, and I get a metallic vibration at wround 3500-4000 rpm. I think I'll just clamp it back on in a spot close to where it used to be.
