OT: What is a reasonable price to ship a car?
I found a car for sale in Atlanta that I would like to make an offer on, and I'm looking at ways to bring it to home, about 800 miles to KC. I called 8 different shipping companies over lunch today and the cheapest estimate (and they would not guarantee the price) was $700. For some inexplicable reason, the price to ship east-to-west seems to be higher than shipping the other direction. I won't even comment on the more expensive quotes I got.
I'd previously looked into renting a truck and trailer to make the round-trip myself, but the difference in the bottom line cost wouldn't be nearly enough to justify 2-3 days driving. Does anyone have any experience to recommend a "discount" shipper? After budgeting for shipping, I'd like to have some money left over to make a fair offer on the car.

pricing on shipping is not only dependant on mileage, but also dates/times and whether or not the company has a return shipment to maximize their costs...
If they're shipping a car from ATL to KC and they have a car in the general vicinity of KC that needs to be shipped, it will save you some money...I'd say 700 is a little high, a more reasonable number for an 800 mile journey should probably be closer to 500 IMO...do a google search, as I have never used such a company personally...HTH

Yeah I got an $1100 price quote, but for an open double-decker car hauler, not the Ritz Carlton on wheels.
I would have liked to watch that guy unload his truck: "hmmm...exotic...exotic...antiquated American musclecar..."

yea, i spent about 1100 also to get my R shipped from CA to VA.
options like closed or open truck, home to home service is what made it 1100, otherwise it would have only been like 750.
Here is the most complete list of automotive transporters I could find when I was looking into it.

Hope that helps you out man. Good luck!

my dad shipped his porchse from NYC to STL in a trailer similar to what BlueR was talking about.. enclosed double decker.. pretty pimp.. it cost him like $1000, for all that, but it did take a few weeks to get it(they waited for full shipments both directions or something).. I'll call him tonight and find out who he used..

Does anyone else have a suggestion? I'm a little ticked today. A couple of days ago I got the lowest bid of $650. I called the company back today and the guy acted like he had amnesia, and quoted me $800.
I've also tried to get a "hook-up" deal through a friend of a friend, but that hasn't panned out. I'm not going to throw in the towel just yet, but it's starting to look like shipping costs are going to be prohibitively expensive.

took me a little longer than expected to get the info, but my dad used a company called Dependable Auto Shippers (DAS).. They have optionality for covered or open trailers, with open ones being cheaper of course..
not sure if you called these people yet or not, but worth looking up!

Had you considered one of those places where a person drives your car to its destination? I would expect that to be cheaper than shipping. My mom used to drive somebody's car like that every once in a while, but that was about a billion years ago and I have no idea what the name of the outfit was.
Thanks mstewar, I think I've called DAS, I'll have to go back over my notes. As for finding someone to drive it back to KC, I forgot to mention that this is a race car and not streetable.
Instead of calling, I emailed everyone when I had to get my car shipped. You have everything in black and white when you finally make the decision on who to go with.
I paid 750 by open carrier from Miss to Cali.
Good luck and get everything in writing. If you're not happy with any one aspect of a certain company, keep looking as there are literally hundreds of companies that ship cars. Took me weeks before I came up w/ one and I wasn't happy with them when it was all done.

Jim, tell you what- if my car is not ready in time, and you're getting the car I hope you're getting... then if you let me race it at the IT-Pro in Topeka in 3 weeks, then I'll drive out with my trailer and get it for ya. If I win, the cash prize alone would pay for the IT-Pro entry and all the gas for the long haul too, lol
road trip!!
...but I'm hoping #24 will be ready by that weekend
