easiest thing is to get a new tranny, or take that sumbitch to a shop and have them look at it and see if there is a gromet they can replace for you and it seems as if it would be the problem with your 4th gear, does it grind when you try to put it in? if so thats why....the fluid is what helps the gears synch up as much as the synchro's

shift shaft seal, can be changed without removing the tranny, they cost less than $5.......

not to hijack the thread, but I was having a similar problem. My friend had the b16 i have in his 92 hatch and never had a problem with 4th gear grinding, and now i do, and it also pops out of 5th gear, and it never did that before. I did have a tranny leak, but i've since had that fixed. I thought it might have something to do with me using HCP mounts and using HAsport shift linkage, as I know the HCP mounts set the engine further back towards the firewall. Could it be that I need to get the HCP shift linkage and that the HAsport linkage is a little too long and causing it to pop out of gear?

drain tranny, remove shift linkage, pry out seal, press in new seal with a deep socket.
