recently did a drain & flush on my tranny because of a leak from the half shaft seal that i had to replace. shifts much better now only problem is that i can never downshift into 2nd anymore. i can shift from 1st to 2nd easily but not vice versa. only unless i slow to a rolling near stop about 5mph then i could shift into 2nd. gets annoying as im used to doing 2nd turning from a corner and now i just get locked out. that's the only trouble gear. it's a 93 hatch w/ swapped b17 with original ys1 tranny. i would love to swap to a hydro tranny as the cable isn't my thing. it shouldn't be a clutch issue as i put in a fidanza set a few months ago. i'm thinking bad synchros...

any suggestions?

do you sleep my man, you bumped this thread at 4:17, yes I would say you are correct in thinking it's the syncro. You might try a different fluid, when you filled the fluid did you make sure it came up to the drain hole this could be caused by low fluid. Did you ever have problems downshifting into second before this?

didn't get much sleep lol. yea i filled it up to the hole. i had low fluid to start with because of a leak which i fixed, but never had that 2nd gear downshifting problem before. happened only after i started driving it after a while. maybe going on for a while with that leak and very low fluid level might have somehow caused this.

yea, try some GM Syncromesh friction modified. it will make a shity tranny feel brand new and shift like butter. sux u just bought the honda ****.

yea i heard the syncromesh was really great stuff. i'll probably look into gettin a few quarts when i drain and fill it up again

only 2 quarts. at 9-18 bux a quart. and it HAS to be friction modified for it to fix grinds.

yea i'll look into that. i don't have grinding issues but according to another thread posted in the acura section this guy had about the same problem in 2nd... turned out to be his 1-2 synchros... likely my problem.

oil maybe to thick for the old tranny. the honda MTF changed their oil to something new and is probably not good for the old trannys but good for the new hondas. go with GM its thinner.

but i do find it very odd that everything was hunky dory until you changed fluid... then you get a problem?

i would start with fluid change again... it is your cheapest route, and easiest i might add, to take to potentially fix your problem.

Sometimes rev-matching is about comfortable downshifting instead of the rapid slow down you usually get. It's also about keeping your speed through corners while still exiting in the right gear.

Synchros are there so you can shift while moving. It has absolutely nothing to do with rev-matching.

I can get it into 2nd/3rd much easier if I rev match, versus not doing it.

yea im a casual city driver; not too hard on the car. usually slow and hold in the clutch before a lower gear catches

dude cable feels different from a hydro i've been used to. honestly i don't like it but i'm getting used to how it feels. i'm getting a hydro soon enough.

so if i understand right, all the upshifts are fine, all the downshifts are fine EXCEPT 3-2.

possible causes: shift collar, synchros, keys, interlocks or detents.

honestly since it shifts fine 1-2 then im thinking the synchro is fine.

my first thought is the interlocks or detents. they are what keeps it from selecting 2 gears at once, and what holds it in gear once youve selected it. sounds like something is binding between 3 and 2.

definitely start with another oil change, as long as the new oil is the weight the manual calls for, it will be fine in the old transmission.

on the Bottom? of your trans there should be 2x12mm plugs in line. #1 and #2 as shown in this picture below..

Try removing them and see if the detent ***** are somehow stuck inside the collars.. be careful, it's oily..

should be a detent collar (Looks like a bolt), aluminum sealing washer, spring, and 6mm? detent ball. everything should pretty much fall out of the trans.. if the detent ball is stuck in the collar, it will cause this problem because your gates (Shift forks) aren't aligned properly in neutral position.
