Adjusting timing on Mini-me, car putters while idleling HELP!!!!!
Ok, the pulley mark lined up, the cam gear is lined up the belt is on, the tensioner is tightened, the A6 distributor is tight and in place. I start the car and it putters at idle, if I rev it it putters some more then revs up, sound good about 2500 RPM +.
This is a rebuilt 92 z6 head with a A6 intake mani and dizzy.
I removed each plug cable when the car was runnign all are sparking. I bought a digital timing light, I can get a light, the RPM I see the mark when the timing light flashes.
The stock setting at 20 degrees right?.
The gun reads at zero if I use the buttons it provides me with to set the light at 20 degrees I do not see the tick mark, if I advance the degrees on the light from 0 and keep an eye on the tick mark, each degree I advance the tick mark show up in front of the marker on the cover. I can go up to 13 degrees before I cannot see the tick mark anymore.
If I cannot see tick mark does that mean that my timing is off?
if so how do I adjust this?
Could this be caused by poorly gapped spark plugs, bad distributor?
Any suggestions and help is extremely appreciated. Thank You

yea you need to adjust the cam gear to 5 degrees advance for it to be 0. actually 4.75 is 0 but 5 is a nice round number.
the gear was advance from the get go, thanks for the replies
Something interesting was happening, I would pull the plug cable form the piston one and the car would still run with no change, but if I pull the plug from another cylinder it would not. Anyways after an hour or two of checking and switching plugs among other things, I decided to adjust the valves, it turned out cylinder one exhaust vallves were alittle loose, the change was so small that I did not think it would make a different but it did. It idles fine but the throttle gets stuck, at around 2500 RPM. then I bleep the and it goes back down, but that is another story.

check your injector wiring. mine was the same way. i found that one of the mpfi wires came loose at the ecu. car still ran and drove just without any power above 5k
