"Energy conserving" automobile oil is a no-no for most motorcycles. Stick with MC specific oil. You most likely don't have a Catylytic converter and you most likely DO have a wet clutch, unless you're talking about a BMW GS
. A wet clutch will slip with "energy conserving" oil. See the mobile1 faq for more information on this.
I have never been able to confirm this but quite a few people in the industry have told me Honda 10/40 oil is a MC specific vesion of Mobile1. The Mobile1 specific MC oil is $9/quart at Walmart. Amsoil is a good synthetic oil and a version is made specific to MC use. I think Motul invented synthetic oil and lots of people swear by it.

Great thread. I had read something before that said Mobil 1 actually stood up better than the MC specific oils. I can't remember where I read that though. It was some test a college professor did I believe.

i agree
i agree
Just to clarify, the mobil1 full synthetic in the 15w50 weight is non energy conserving which means no friction modifiers to affect wet clutches. Many late model bikes have 3way cats but it doesn't appear to be a big deal. Nobody checks emissions anyways

I read the magazine article twice over.
Basically, their conclusion involved comparing motorcycle oils and automotive oils of the same brand. for instance the Mobil 1 mc oil is different from mobil 1 auto oil. Valvoline mc oil and car oil are almost identical.
From reading the aritcle, Castrol Syntec beat out both of the mobil-1 oils and has a better numbers than almost all of the mc synthetic oils except i think motul 300v?
The only thing that castrol syntec, and other auto oils lacked that mc oils had was more calcium and some other mineral.
Other than that..they compared the fricion modifiers and they were all about the same.
I say read teh article and make yoru own conclusion. WHen it comes down to it, some of the regular dino oils from honda or yamalube really sucked. My vote is going to castrol syntec for my next oil change.

Everything I need is the same in auto. I don't need the metal on metal additives. Sheer propertiess are the same and the rest everyone has heard before
