Default say it aint so! 15.3 in a b16a ef?

well, i just got my b16 in my 90 civic si. i've driven like 500 miles on it and it works pretty good. i took it to the tracks on wednesday and ran mid 15's all day with a best time of 15.3 (quarter mile). is this normal? i have a full interior and a speaker box in the back, i weighed my car in at 2340 lbs...the motor is basically stock, with no more than 50,000 km + 500 miles on it. i have a stage one clutchmaster clutch, yokohama s306 tires on 14" steel rims, aem cold air intake, and a cheapo exhaust with 2.25" piping. again...is this normal? i anticipated low 15's with possible 14's...do i have to break in my motor still? or is this it for a mostly stock SiR?

It's entirely possible. My best time is a 15.016 @ 92.5mph or so... I'd definitely put a few more miles on it before you start ragging on it though!

My car weighs about as much as yours, maybe a bit less since I have to pull my sub box before racing (it's not bolted down), and I have a K&N drop-in filter instead of your cold-air. I have stock exhaust rather than your 2.25" cheapie. What kind of 60' times were you pulling? I've got a best of 2.3, which is still pretty crappy...

Some timeslips... my fastest one first, then my first three timed runs (in order)... I'm car #682:
My best time
First timed dragstrip run
Second run
With a passenger

15.3 = low 15's .........

My first day out in my R, I ran a 15.1 best, so you will get better with time. And when you think about it, you have 160 hp in a 2,300 lb set-up which only equals 14.37:1 lbs per hp. The R is 13.33 lbs per hp, so that time is about what you can expect.

When I get mine, I already picked up a used set of '00 Si cams and some AEM cam gears, plus an AEM intake, so I will expect to be at about 135 whp and around 15.1 or so with it.

I think it's more a matter of driver than the car.
drag racing takes practice, you cannot expect to be fast right from the begining.

Launch is the biggest factor in ET (elapsed time) on FWD cars.
You didn't post 60 foot times, but i bet they are on the "bad" side.

I run a best of 14.8 on my CRX with B16, I still had the clutch the engine came with from japan, and it was slipping like hell, so I think I could have been a bit faster.

This is all very true, I ran a 15.6 in my 91 si after getting really used to it, I put in my b16a and ran the same exact time but that was the first and only run I have ever done at the track. So all it takes is time, not that I would know, only had my setup for 2 month so I am still learning to drive as well.......good luck and what were your 60' times

HHmm, seems about right. But I bet you can pull a better times. Check your mph. I end up at 95+- mph and high 14's consistent. My rex weighs 2070 without me in it. I only have header, exhaust, intake. I was able to raise my mph at the end by taking out the headlight and running no filter at the track. What ECU are you running? Any check engine lights? My v-tec kicks in at 5200, so I launch at about 4000 and ride it til i get traction, I try to make it so when I grab traction I'm in v-tec zone. What's your redline? I'm running a Zdyne ECU and rev limit is at 8500 but I shift at like 8000. Run GSR's if you got some. These 16's are slowing down my mph just a tad bit. What tranny you running. How's your 0-60ft times? I'd cut some weight down and take out your headlight. If your loosing traction try running lower tire pressure.

ok guys...here's the info:

i have the s1 tranny, and stock everything...like i said. i do consider myself a better than average racer, but i'm still learning how to launch with the b16a. here's my times at the sacramento raceway:

1st run-
r/t- .895
60 ft- 2.434
et- 15.513 @ 90.460 mph

2nd run-
r/t- .681
60 ft- 2.590
et- 15.868 @ 89.916 mph

3rd run-
r/t- .636
60 ft- 2.456
et- 15.609 @ 88.832 mph

4th run-
r/t- .604
60 ft- 2.421
et- 15.344 @ 90.425 mph

any tips with my 60' times would help

HHmm, your mph is kinda low. It should be a little higher. What gear are you in when you cross the line? I'm into 4th pretty well when I cross the finish line. How well does your v-tec feel? Maybe fuel clog? Replace fuel filter. Check your distributor, cap rotor, plugs? Even firing? Advance timing?

all my dist. stuff should be workin fine...the only thing not stock are the spark plugs...i went to napa and got the cheaper sets (total of 4 plugs were only 10 bucks, not the real plugs made for b16a). umm...everything is stock, including timing. you think advancing my timing should help out? how far should i advance it on 91 pump gas? i finish in 4th gear too...but i'm only in that gear for less than a second and a half...

oh yeah, i can't really "feel" vtec kick in...its more like i just hear it. i floor the gas, and i hear it switch over at like 4700-4800 rpm, then it stays at that tone until like 6000 rpm then my intake just gets loud as hell, and continues to scream until redline...

What elevation are you at? Elevation can make a huge difference.
I have a friend who ran a 14.8 in Salt lake and ran a 14.3 in Vegas.

At 937ft here in Indy, I ran 14.8 @ 93 in my CR-X Si. As I saw above in someone else's reply, I also still have the clutch that came with my swap. The 60ft times are horrible with my stock wheels and all-seasons, in the high 2.4 to 2.6 range. And each shift is very soft with the crappy clutch. Mods are EG2 box with drop-in HKS foam filter and an axle-back muffler. Still running crappy stock b-pipe and a smashed jdm exhaust manifold. Hoping to run low 14s on slicks with a new clutch and bolt-ons.

Runing high low 15's and high 14's soundright for this setup. I just wonder how many people understand how hard it is to go fast all motor. When these guys in the 00' SI ask how to get their car into 12's N/A I just roll my eyes. I guess they think their Si's are the $hit.

Hehehehehehe ....... all motor 12's in an Si ......... is right!

But in a Rex or a hatch it can be done with about 200 whp and some slicks ...... but it takes a LOT of money, knowledge and time to get that ........ see me in about two years!

How were you launching? I find that what worked well when at you power level was to slip the clutch from about 4500-5000 rpms. You get some wheelspin, but no wheel hop if done right.

Your times dont seem that bad. Just a little better launch and you should be near the 14s if not in them. Just for a reference my freind with a 99 Si with I/H and a clutch had a best time of 15.1@90 at Sac Raceway. You should be able to do at least that good

ok, i live in sacramento, which isn't that high up there (i don't think). and i bought a brand new stage one clutchmaster clutch...it does its job and doesn't slip at all...and why would i feel vtec with a new clutch? the clutch shouldn't have any effect on my vtec, unless i slipped all the way past 5000 rpms....i dunno, i just got some 99 gsr rims with the stock tires, so i'll see what i'll pull on wednesday nite...i think i'd like to buy headers, but does anyone know where i can get some that'll bolt on without no other things (i heard you might have to change front cross members)....
