1/4 mile times on an ep3
hey i got a race with an ep3 this weekend and i want to know what im up aginst. as far as i know he has an intake and exaust. what should he be running? any imput would be most welcome.
thx
thx
Well when you race him you will find out what you will need if you lose, or if you win then your doing something right!
Also another good thing to know is what kind of car you will be driving. And its just a race, (hopfully not illegal drag racing).
From what i have seen as well with people running the quarter mile here on h-t with their ep's with basic bolt-ons are around mid to low 15's so probably expect that with that guys ep.

I take it you are running a prelude SH --- mods?
You will be about even with mods, without mods he will just barely walk you.
At bandimere (6000 FT above sea level) stock vtec h22 preludes run 17.0+ --
I have an ep3 with I/E/Hondata (at the time I went to the track) and broke into the 16's... (just barely)
REMEMBER THESE TIMES ARE AT 6000 FT AND IN THE MOUNTAINS... so dont even start the 17 second **** talking....

Comes down to the driver. Regardless of mods, if you know how to drive it will not matter how many mods he has other than FI. I have VERY RARELY seen EP3's hit low 15's with basic mods but I have seen it, more like low 16's to mid 15's range is the norm. Prelude's are anywhere from mid 15's to high 14's with basic mods. Prelude's are faster cars, but don't let this inflate your ego because an EP3 with a good driver can embarass you. And I hope you are taking this race to the track so you can actually see who is faster and has better driving skill.

Must be quite the shitty driver because I ran a 16.2 in mine and it was my VERY first time at the track with the stock tire pressure and everything.

I *JUST* got back from the track (literally 5 minutes ago) ... I ran a 16.8 w/ I/H/E and Hondata on street tires at 6000 feet above sea level. I think its good for 16.5 at this altitude w/ a good driver... I cant get a good launch, my 16.8 tonight was with a very shitty 2.5 60 foot time. With some practice, some slicks and some motor mounts im hoping i can *maybe* break into the 15.9's.
Again though, I saw preludes run 17.0+ tonight. But then again, there is a 13 second prelude out here.

I do not want to rain on your parade but you wont be able to break 15's @6000ft. I feel the pain of high altitude I live in Salt Lake @4500ft above sea level, not many cars run that great in SLC. I drive a Prelude Type SH and the best I have been able to muster is 15.5 with a 2.2 60ft with intake and exhaust @4500ft, at Ponoma I have run 14.7 with 2.1 60ft, and Vegas 15.1 2.1 60ft. I can see Prelude's running 17.0's at 6000ft with junky drivers, hell I do not see too many prelude break faster than 16.7 here @4500ft. Again it comes down to the driver. I have not even seen an EP3 hit 16's all I see them hit is 17.0's @ 4500ft, however I have seen them hit 15's in cali and vegas, mostly high 15's one or two have hit low 15's. Again you do not see that too often
People who own EP3's around me seem that none of them can drive for ****! I ran 15.2@89mph w/ AEM CAI and Custom 2.25" Apexi N1 Exhaust..lol. I/H/E/Hondata 16's?!?! I bet i could hit high 14's with that!

Whatever. Obviously you dont understand elevations realtionship with 1/4 mile times.

I understand. I think your mostly correct. Thing is ... there are 2 N/a Ep3s on ephatch.com that have ran 14.8+ at sea level with I/H/E/Hondata/Slicks and good drivers (ones the NOPI chick champ this year) ... anyway ... 15.8+ up here (a second loss) is possible with I/H/E/Hondata/Slicks ... but like I said, it will take practice, great weather and a bit of luck.
The fact im getting 16.8s with horrible launches (Ive had better 60 foots when I was in the 17's) at 1500 feet higher elevation then SLC inspires me to keep trying... Im also gonna take my back seats out.

Well that is a good goal, I hope you can hit 15's 'taikahn'. The fact you are getting better times with worse 60ft's means you are shifting faster than befor, good job. As long as you are constantly improving in some way. If you nail a 2.2 60 ft the best I can see would be about 16.1-16.2, but prove me wrong though. I have been told prelude SH's can't hit 15's here @ 4500ft but through the course of the season and many trail and error attempts, I hit 15's. And that is all it took was hitting 15's once and now I hit mid 15's every run @4500ft, still room to improve I only have intake and cat back exhaust, and I could still get my 60ft down as this was my first season running the car at the track. Keep me posted on your progress though, I wanna know if you hit 15's up there.
Stock these cars can run 15.8 in a quarter mile. However, in a recent mag of Import Tuner, it is proven that the Ep3 with an AEM intake(cold) and a full cat-back exhuast, the car gains an easy 15hp. If the driver can race, and race good, he can probably run low 15s. What kind of car are you driving. A Prelude SH? If so, then I dunno. It will probably be a very good race. But the EP3 might pull.
lol.. an ep3 w/ a intake and exhuast pull on a ******* prelude sh. Holy **** cant you tell were in the ep3 forum. Assuming both drivers can point their car in a straight line, and have half of an idea of how to drive, the lude would PULL CONVINCINGLY in third gear. Even if the ep3 hatch had 15 whp over stock, hypothetically it still wouldnt win.
well, if u dont believe me about pulling on a lude check out our forum and ask around. They have all seen it. I dont know if the Lude is a lemon or what. The car has a AEM SRI, Greddy EVO exhaust, and a DC Ceramic Header. I have AEM CAI and Custom 2.25" exhaust. We have gonet o the track and everything. There has been one close race and i won by a bumper. Other than that all the races were pretty convincing. I never thought my EP could beat a Prelude. I am just telling u my experiences. U can check both of the cars and our forum at DSRChicago.com. Thanx..Chris.
hey im not saying there isnt a possibility.. The lude doesnt even have to be a lemon to lose. Just a incapable driver. I can atest to this, I beat an ITR here with my 99 SI, because the new owner of the car couldnt drive. I know the itr could rip because its previous owner ran 14.1-14-2's with it. Obiviously if the dude could drive at all he coulda taken me. But thats the point i made, if the 2 drivers are competent (and both cars are running as they should) the lude would win 10/10 times.
It comes down to the driver, this does not reflect the the 5th gen automatic as they are not worth mentioning, and are disappionting. Let me post some specs.
(5th gen)
Type SH: Horsepower-(97-98)195 (99-01)200@7000rpm
Torque-156@5250rpm
Curb wieght-3042
power to wieght-(97-98)15.6 (99-01)15.2 pounds for every horsepower
Torque to wieght-19.5 pounds for every ftlb of torque
Prelude S:Horsepower-(97-98)195 (99-01)200@7000rpm
Torque-156@5250rpm
curb wieght-2954
power to wieght-(97-98)15.1 (99-01)14.77 pounds for every horsepower
torque to wieght-18.93 pounds for every ftlb of torque
All 5th gen had the same motor, Honda 'claimed' 195 for 97-98 and 200 for 99-01 through a different exhaust manifold. I have seen these side by side everything is the same diameter, measurements are the same. 97-98 put the same number to the wheels as the 99-01.
(4th gen)
Prelude VTEC:Horsepower-190@6800rpm
Torque-158@5500rpm
curb wieght-2932
power to wieght-15.4 pounds for every horsepower
torque to wieght-18.5 pounds for every ftlb of torque
(1st, 2nd gear are geared a little higher then the fifth gens, everything else the same)
Civic SI(EP3):horsepower-160@6800rpm
Torque-132@5000rpm
curb wieght-2742
power to wieght-17.1 pounds for every horsepower
Torque to wieght-20.7 pounds for every ftlb of torque
All specs have been taken from sources such as car and driver. This is only info, every one can take what they want out of this. I am not slandering the EP3, I am merely stating facts. The EP3 is by all means a heavy car for its power output. Someone mentioned beware of the DC5R motor civics, get real, they are not easily available and expensive. We are talking stock or a couple of bolt on's. And there are also automatic Prelude's which will lose or at least hang with an EP3.
